Beer Garden
Re: Beer Garden
Great articles Vee. Which city has it right or wrong I guess comes down to if you wish to live in a vibrant expanding city, or a slow growth quiet city. Ask any long time resident of Brisbane if they prefer the Brisbane of old, or the shiny new Brisvegas and you may get differing opinions. For sure the explosive growth of Brisbane has come at the cost of heritage buildings and streetscapes as with all big cities. At least the old customs house was not bowled over completely for the 47 level tower and for that we can be thankful.

Adelaide Oval is having similar positive impact with us, as is MONA in Hobart. Good on 'em ...monotonehell wrote:I like this new contrasting articles thing you have going on, Vee.
Can't help thinking Adelaide needs another drawcard to really boost our tourist numbers and profile even further. I don't think theme parks, science museums or aquariums are the way to do it. Other cities have these things already. We need something more unique.
I think a world-class (sorry to use that word) Aboriginal Culture museum utilising SA Museum's and the Art Gallery's excellent collection could do it for us. Ideally this would be housed in an unique iconic building which would attract as much interest as the Museum itself. The museum should be far more than a collection of museum pieces but an interactive journey that really tells the story of Aboriginal culture utilising the latest technology, but with a particular focus on the Kaurna people of the Adelaide region. Maybe Tandanya could be combined into this new facility?
Overseas tourists in particular are fascinated by our aboriginal culture .... It's part of what makes Australia unique. There is currently nothing else like what I have describe above in Australia, and I think it's a great opportunity for us given SA already has a fantastic collection of artefacts. I think Mike Rann suggested something like this whilst he was still Premier.
Re: Beer Garden
Pour millions into the park lands. Take responsibility away from the ACC who have mismanaged it for years, get to a state where it's a major drawcard, then go for world heritage listing. Re: Festival Plaza Redevelopment | $800 million
That is strange, there is very nice night time up-lighting for the undercroft out front there. Someone must have turned off the wrong switches...claybro wrote:interesting photo of the town hall lit up...special event was it? When I walked past about 10pm last Friday night it was in darkness and the area of the footpath under the porch was really dark and creepy. It should be lit like that at all times, for safety and appearance.
Oh wait. Maybe, just speculating here, they forgot to turn on the timer for the night lighting after the xmas projections were discontinued?

I drove by around 12.30 am on Monday and it was lit up. There are fairy lights along the plane trees on King Willy too.monotonehell wrote:That is strange, there is very nice night time up-lighting for the undercroft out front there. That's interesting, I went past at 10:39 last night and it was in darkness. I'm pretty sure someone hasn't twiddled the correct knob. I'm going to send a message to town hall staff.SRW wrote:I drove by around 12.30 am on Monday and it was lit up. With all due respect, I would strongly suggest you park your car, walk from Vic Square to North Terrace and then back and tell me if you think the footpath is well lit, or if you even feel safe?SRW wrote:I drove by around 12.30 am on Monday and it was lit up. I reckon this is the case. I have walked through this area numerous times before and it's been very well lit.monotonehell wrote: That's interesting, I went past at 10:39 last night and it was in darkness. Hey guys, advice please. My daughter is going to Adelaide Uni this year, and we're also planning a family holiday mid-year.
Does anyone know if the below term dates are for ALL subjects? Don't want to book flights and find my daughters course goes longer than these published dates.
I've tried calling the Uni but no answer.

Re: Festival Plaza Redevelopment | $800 million
I meant only to comment that town hall is well lit, and from a tourist perspective the fairy lights are nice. The footpaths themselves could be somewhat better lit, but I routinely walk through the city and I've never felt unsafe on King William. I'll take the point though, as I can't say the the say the same for some other streets - Currie for instance can feel unsafe due to lack of lighting and surveillance.claybro wrote:With all due respect, I would strongly suggest you park your car, walk from Vic Square to North Terrace and then back and tell me if you think the footpath is well lit, or if you even feel safe?SRW wrote:I drove by around 12.30 am on Monday and it was lit up. Re: Beer Garden
Theres a stock standard university semester / term which most courses go by. But some courses operate longer / shorter or during the 'holidays'. It seems your daughters course may be one thats one of those few courses that work to a different timetable.

I sent a message Friday morning and someone on the property maintenance team went and fiddled with the settings. They assure me it should be all good now.crawf wrote:I reckon this is the case. Although I did walk past later in the evening, at about 7pm (still fully sunny) and half the up-lights were on and half off... so not sure if they got it right lol
