some are very good ideas but would require a lot of land acquisistion which I doubt would happen.

To make this freeway viable it needs to be atleast 3 but preferably 4 lanes each way. I just hope they secure any funding before major consturction starts on the 2 lane each way Anzac highway underpass as that will most likely determine the width for the remainder of the "upgrade".

Land acquisition bills would make up the base of the cost if the plan goes ahead. Seeing as some blocks do go out pretty wide (look at the South Road/Anzac Hwy example) - surely they would maximise room, to allow efficiency and capability of movement, aka 4 lanes each direction. The earth-cut method (like the one shown in the tolled roads thread) would be most appropriate - only taking into consideration of Adelaides urban layout, and the numerous side streets that cross over - which would otherwise be blocked if built at ground level.
Whatever solution comes needs to be a practical one, that doesnt concentrate on the solution of the road/freeway at hand, but all other routes affected.

I guess another option to minimise on land acquisition costs though I would assume they money saved would eqaul the additonal cost but atleast people could keep there homes... Have a 4 lane freeway going south and directly above that build a north bound freeway.

Please allow me to remind you of the horror of the Alaskan Way Viaduct in Seattle. Its a stacked elevated freeway, and is a monstrous eyesore on the landscape.

Given Adelaide's low density, the obtrusion of such a structure, like that you propose would scream horror in the faces of people everywhere. Its a no deal.

I don't reckon it's that bad, but it wouldn't need to be 3 levels for a start so it wouldn't be anywhere near that bad, but you can do it that way (above ground) or have a full length tunnel.

THE $2 billion plan to transform Adelaide's South Rd into a high-speed, cross-town freeway is not only right but makes basic economic sense.

Adelaide is a ribbon city, its configuration determined by the Hills and the coast.

To drive from the outskirts in the north to the rural districts in the south is the equivalent of driving from Sydney to Wollongong.

Yet for a coalition of reasons including neglect, lack of vision, political irresponsibility and financial constraint, Adelaide's north-south corridor is little more than a goat track compared with the high-speed Sydney to Wollongong transport link.

This is not an issue of apportioning blame.

It is a recognition that something must be done.

A group of South Australian transport leaders, with the support of Transport Minister Pat Conlon, has made a submission to federal Transport Minister Mark Vaile to have the project made a national priority - backed, of course, by Commonwealth funding.

Mr Vaile's response was, at best, lukewarm.

But that doesn't preclude the possibility of a partnership between the State Government and private contractors tackling the job.

To entice private investment, the Government would have to agree to make the north-south corridor a toll road.

The state Labor Government clearly fears the political ill-will which it perceives would flow from SA's first contemporary toll road.

But this issue is bigger than blinkered, short-term political benefit.

A north-south corridor is now an economic imperative. Commerce needs a fast, effective road network with a north-south spine.

Socially as well as economically, Adelaide must close the widening chasm between the north and south extremes of the city, a drive which can now take two hours.

The submission to the Federal Government underlines those needs.

If, as seems likely, Commonwealth funding is going to be denied, then the practical alternative is for private investment to fill the void. That won't happen without offering the incentive of toll roads.

The reason stacked elevated freeways have to be three levels is to allow for side streets to pass underneath them, on the ground level.

But yes, its horrendous, and simply should in no way be recognised as an effective form of transportation - as there are socio-economic differences as a result of its 'wall-like structure' dividing communties from the rich and poor. There are environmental implications, that pollutants are trapped in the canyons below, creating an unpleasant atmosphere for travel (only worsened by buildings trapping pollutants) and its just physically...*vomits*.

With this ever-increasing talk and possible action on resolving the transportation corridor issue, I think it is genuinely fair to allow Rann to revoke his no-tolls decree without judgement, for it can only do us more good than harm by providing us Adelaidians with a convinient freeway corridor.
