The podium level is beyond average, lets hope the rest of the tower is ok!

I'll reserve judgment until this is fully complete, but atm it's looking like we are going to end up with a pretty ordinary looking building, in particular the podium

Thanks for the picture, but I don't really see what's glaringly wrong with it, unless you mean it's just unexceptional rather than on the bad side of average?
That bit of finished cladding that we can see (which is not that much of the building) is obviously not the most inspiring or beautiful thing to have ever been built in Adelaide, but I wouldn't call it particularly offensive either.
Perhaps the two main things that I think are possible issues (in my opinion) are:
A) The building's southern wall doesn't look like it will integrate too well with Grote Street. I'm not certain why, but I think the podium is a bit blank considering its height, creating a bit of a walled effect. It could possibly have used some protruding balconies to break up that walled effect to some extent. Also, judging by the renders, the entrance to the building is off that side street rather than on Grote Street, so perhaps the front is less inviting for this reason?
But then again, the building isn't complete yet and it probably seems like a big wall only because everything else along that street is so small. It does make up for this as well to some extent by activating the little side street to the east of the building. Hopefully whoever eventually develops that corner site to the east continues with this activation.
B) If that dark grey/charcoal-y shade of black (not sure if that's the actual name for the shade) is used on the entire building, I don't think it will contrast as well with the red and white on the building as a pure shade of black would.
But hey, I don't think these will be huge deals in the grand scheme of things. It's in my opinion a reasonably good looking building with no blank walls that will hopefully inspire further development along Grote St/Franklin St/Gouger St West.

I was out and about today and looking at the building from the east, I noticed that more scaffolding and shade cloth has been removed from the top level. The allymac has been gone for quite some time now.

Yesterday I noticed some thin bright red cladding (Alucobond ?) at the very top level on the east side. Try to get a picture soon.

I didn't notice that myself. I'll have another look on my way down there later today.

The red structure is a beam supporting part of the rooftop pergola/sun deck (see picture 2) . You need to be a fair way away eg in the carpark next to the bus depot. There is also a red column on the north west corner just below the roof top level.(see picture 1). Also the blank stair wall on the west side is being painted in a 2 tone grey striped pattern.

I think most of us will like this one when the scaffolding comes down, will probably grow on some people.

A view of the western side showing some more of the red/pink colour scheme - Picture 21 Dec 2016. It is more redish than my picture shows.

Having moved to Auckland a few years ago, bit out of loop on Adelaide projects, but was impressed to see this one rise so quickly over the past 12 - 18 months.
However this is such a fat bulky building. Very dominant, and I think they could have done a far better job of visually breaking it up to appear is if it were two seperate towers, linked together. Obviously if it was surrounded by buildings of similar size it wouldn't appear as such anymore, but it definitely is a 'first' for that part of the CBD. I thought we were meant to be discouraging having so many units accessed via one internal corridor. Will this building have two cores, one for north and south? Are they connected? I haven't been able to find a link to some of the internal layouts, if they're still floating around on the DAC website somewhere.
Sorry if this has been discussed somewhere before, but is the developer Chinese? (or partnered with one?) I felt the red was for good luck/prosperity!

It seems that some posters above are masters of judging incomplete buildings

The building is finally getting undressed
[COM] Re: 152-160 Grote Street | 58m | 19 lvls | Mixed Use
I think this one is going to look very nice, even if it looks 80% the same as the renders.

I was thinking the same thing the other day driving down Grote street. What a huge impact this building is having.arki wrote:I hardly post here, but I do read regularly. And whenever I read a ridiculous post, I have noticed 9 times out of 10 it is you who has written it.
Regarding this development, the impact it has had on the vista from the south west of the city is amazing. From what has been unwrapped so far I also don't mind the look of the cladding.
It's not really tall, but that goes to show how flat most the city is, and like was said many years ago on this site, the city filled with buildings in the 50-70m range would have a huge impact.
