[COM] SkyCity Adelaide Casino Expansion | 55m | 12 Levels | Hotel
[COM] Re: SkyCity Adelaide Casino Expansion | 55m | 12 Levels | Hotel
Correct me if I’m wrong, but it looks like from Andy’s pic at least they’ve got the water feature running again and fixed up the stairs? Can anyone who has been past recently confirm? Cheers.

It's been a couple weeks since I was down there, and though they may have tidied up a bit and done some plantings, it still looked atrocious.

I ride past every day. Nothing has been tidied up, and the water features at both ends of the bridge remain off (as they have for a year and a half now).

This really is appalling.Nathan wrote:I ride past every day. Nothing has been tidied up, and the water features at both ends of the bridge remain off (as they have for a year and a half now).
What’s the point on trying to make this part of the city the centrepiece of Adelaide if the basics like landscaping and a couple of water features are left to rack and ruin?

Lots of action along this stretch of the entrance to the new hotel this week. Looks like lots of new paving is going in.

Multi million dollar casino expansion and new hotel, but the old building still has a rusted out flag pole. It's the small things and finer details sometimes that make the bigger impression.

I ride my pushie past here regularly, I think this building looks excellent any time of the day. About time we got a casino that brings us into the 21st century

Let's be clear. Skycity has taken a big gamble (pardon the pun) on this project. I mean c'mon, even Darwin Casino has higher revenue than this place. Lets support it by taking the better half for a night out in what is definitely the best high end hotel in the city.

It's about time they invested proper money here.Jaymz wrote: ↑Tue Sep 29, 2020 9:54 pmLet's be clear. Skycity has taken a big gamble (pardon the pun) on this project. Darwins casino is a resort with accommodation. Our casino has only just added accommodation.
Melbourne's Crown casino is an entire entertainment complex. You can walk along the Yarra and pop into any number of restaurants, over 50 eateries in fact in the whole complex. You can shop, you can watch movies, you can go bowling, gamble obviously, drink, watch live theatre, concerts, escape rooms etc. Plus it's had hotels for years as well. Crown Promenade, Crown Towers and the newer addition Crown Metropol. Did I miss any?
I posted ages ago that the Riverbank redevelopment should have had as its centrepiece, a new casino-entertainment complex, aquarium etc.
Is there anything that will draw you to the general area without having to walk into the casino first?
Not that I don't like the new addition here.

If I'm going out for the evening with my wife I'll go to whatever seems to offer the best experience for the money we're happy to spend. If that happens to be the casino then fine, but there are plenty of smaller locally owned venues that I'd be keen to encourage first.Jaymz wrote: ↑Tue Sep 29, 2020 9:54 pmLet's be clear. North Terrace is separate, and it's nothing exciting.Jaymz wrote: ↑Wed Sep 30, 2020 12:19 amFestival Centre, North Terrace, Adelaide Oval..... should I add more?rev wrote: ↑Wed Sep 30, 2020 12:08 amIt's about time they invested proper money here.Jaymz wrote: ↑Tue Sep 29, 2020 9:54 pmLet's be clear. Adelaide Oval. Ok. You go to a game, but what is there along the riverbank to actually bring you to the area in general (not footy or cricket), what is there to do before or after? Without stepping foot inside the casino.
The festival centre? Believe it or not, but theatre does not appeal to the majority, it's more a niche segment of the community. And even if it did, what is there about the design there that will draw you to the area? Nothing.
Look at the banks of the Yarra where the Crown complex fronts it. There's like 20 damn eateries and bars that front it that you can walk in to. There's your reason to go to that precinct without stepping foot inside a casino. Inside the complex, there's a lot more to do then just gamble. That's why it's called an entertainment complex.
Darwins casino is also a resort, and it's on the beach front too mind you.
What would bring people to the general area outside of the casino? That space between the new footbridge and the boat sheds, where you can see the car park from the river banks, should have been turned into restaurants and bars. Even the front of the festival centre, the lower section where the council is obsessed with grass..

Did it ever occur to either of you that Darwin's casino is a resort because the weather permits it to be? I agree that this casino probably would have been more worthwhile had it been an entertainment precinct like Crown in Melbourne but I am also glad that it is not, the notion of a casino/entertainment precinct dominating the public realm instead of cultural centres like the AFC would be a disaster. And I seriously think you underestimate how much theatre and the like appeal to a wide variety of audiences...rev wrote: ↑Wed Sep 30, 2020 11:56 amNorth Terrace is separate, and it's nothing exciting.Jaymz wrote: ↑Wed Sep 30, 2020 12:19 amFestival Centre, North Terrace, Adelaide Oval..... should I add more?rev wrote: ↑Wed Sep 30, 2020 12:08 am

Adelaides casino from it's inception was always meant to be a smaller more boutique style,European if you like, as opposed to its eastern counterparts. If the likes of Darwin, Alice Springs or evenPerth have gone down the resort path, it's because they exist as more standalone venues-destinations in their own right. I think the casino suits Adelaides boutique vibe ... but do agree, having that convention carpark overlooking the Torrens is an absolute wasted opportunity... not that this is a problem if the casino.
