Brisbane has been announced as the preferred host city for the 2032 Olympic Games.

Meanwhile in Adelaide.....even the crickets have given up.

Meh, it's ok for people to say no to something they don't think would be good for us.

Victoria will see 7,500 jobs created and a $3 billion economic boost from the 2026 games.
With the housing shortage and rental crisis, a build to rent scheme for the athletes village would have had a lasting positive legacy.

We should bid for the 2036 Commonwealth Games - 200 years after 1836.

It’s due in 2034 and 2038.

I think only Australia and The Uk care about the commonwealth games. Seems no one else wants to host them.

Got confused with the Olympics years there - that said, 2036 would be cool for the sake of it, but I see there is a declining appetite for the fiscal and aesthetic mess left behind by hosting of big Games events. 2034 makes sense if we were to host Commonwealth Games, or 2038 as a belated celebration.

I remember Kevin Foley calling the Commonwealth Games as a 'B-grade event'.

The Commonwealth Games is on the wane. Victoria, Australia was the sole candidate and is now hosting it in 2026 and Alberta, Canada is the sole candidate (but not confirmed) for 2030. Australia has already hosted it 3 times in 20 years - 2006 (Melbourne), 2018 (Gold Coast) and 2026 (Victoria). I think the selection committee would be adverse to giving hosting rights to Australia (Adelaide) yet again for 2034.

By which time, I think we will likely be a Republic by then. The opportunity has since come and gone.

There are several other republics in the Commonwealth Games, as they remain members of the Commonwealth of Nations despite not being realms of the Crown.

I think the Commonwealth Games would look more interesting if each Australian state competed separately, like the British home countries - So South Australia could play against Scotland or Jersey in the final of something. Canadian provinces might also want to play separately although their provincial governors represent the GG (ours represent the Crown without reference to the GG). Norfolk Island already competes distinct from Australia.

I don't think it's a case of other's not wanting to host, more so they can't afford to.
Outside of the UK, Australia, Canada, India and perhaps NZ, who lese in the Commonwealth has the economy to support the games?
Who has a large amount of the infrastructure, eg stadia, to use for it? Who can accommodate the visitor numbers?

I think it's something SA should definitely go for. Not only for the tourism boom it could create during and well after the games finished. But also to push for more federal funding for key infrastructure projects particularly public transport. Use it as a catalyst to transform the city, to step up a few notches.
There's the immediate economic impact from works associated with the games, but what about the exposure Adelaide and South Australia would get? How many potential investors that haven't heard of or considered Adelaide/SA before could look at us as an investment opportunity.

Hosting these large scale global sporting events is putting the city and state on the world stage.

They estimate the direct economic boost from the Brisbane Olympics in 2032 at $8 billion from for Queensland. That's half of our total exports as a state.
The exposure Brisbane will get on a global stage will be worth much more then that.

I could imagine if that occurred the woke activists would want a separate team for aboriginals

It was my state teams idea. As they represent the 19th century British colonies, (plus the NT and ACT as I doubt they'd want to be included with SA and NSW respectively), it wouldn't be completely unreasonable to add a pre-colonial team or teams (300 separate nations) but none of the other countries have separate settler and indigenous teams. I can't see a meaningful way of assigning athletes to particular teams in that case. We have an electoral roll that unambiguously allocates people to a single state. The Games already have rules for dual citizens switching teams, but I don't know if they could be extended to overlapping territories as well.
