Re: News & Developments: Port Adelaide
Has there been any updates on the former Harbours Building? Its looking worse everytime I see it with more windows boarded up. I hope it still gets the "1970's hotel" treatment that was originally proposed many years ago.

No nothing. I, or other people, would post updates if there was something to tell.baytram366 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 05, 2024 9:32 amHas there been any updates on the former Harbours Building? Here you go. They bought it and were meant to do the redevelopment.

Australia’s biggest Woolworths supermarket and a new Big W store will open at the Port Adelaide Plaza shopping centre in Adelaide as part of a deal struck between parent company Woolworths Group and rich list investor Shaun Bonett’s Precision Group.
The openings follow a recent $75m redevelopment of the centre, which kick-started Mr Bonett’s path to becoming one of the country’s wealthiest, and most successful property investors.
Precision Group was founded by Mr Bonett in Adelaide in 1994, and made its first major acquisition in 1998, buying the Port Canal Shopping Centre. It was later renaming Port Adelaide Plaza as part of the expansion which was completed in 2022.
Sydney-based Mr Bonett said the new supermarket would open in early 2025, replacing a Coles site that had the capacity to be developed into Australia’s largest Woolworths store.
“Based upon current detailed floorplans, it is our vision to deliver the largest Woolworths supermarket in Australia at Port Adelaide Plaza,” he said.
“The specific floor plan for the Woolworths supermarket will be confirmed as detailed plans are developed. What we can confirm is the current trading floor-plate is able to be configurated to accommodate our vision.”
Meanwhile the Big W store will be the discount department chains first new opening in South Australia since the launch of its Brickworks Marketplace store in 2015.
It will take over the space currently occupied by rival Kmart which confirmed last September that it would close at the end of May, despite backlash from some local shoppers.
At the time, a company spokesperson said the company had made the decision to close the store after a review had determined the community could be supported by nearby stores at West Lakes and Churchill Rd.
The new large-format Big W store will occupy 6500sq m of space, stocking its traditional product lines ranging from homewares, clothes and toys to a full-service “party counter” and direct-to-boot service.
It is expected to begin trading at the end of 2024, followed by the Woolworths supermarket opening in early 2025.
“We’re delighted that Woolworths Group has committed to growing its presence in South Australia with Precision Group,” Mr Bonett said.
“Our strategic focus is always to attract more people to Port Adelaide Plaza – delivering new and everyday shopping experiences that make people want to come and spend their time with us.
“We’re looking forward to celebrating the opening of these two brand new stores with our Port Adelaide customers in the near future.”
From 2019 to 2022, Port Adelaide Plaza underwent a $75m redevelopment and refurbishment, transforming the existing mall into an enlarged retail precinct, with the addition of Aldi and more than 60 specialty and services retailers.
Precision Group owns a portfolio of shopping centres across the country, including the Chevron Renaissance centre in Queensland and the Pran Central shopping centre in Melbourne.

the trouble with woolies is no matter how big their stores are there's so little choice of anything... they'll just use the extra space as in store warehouse

This is why I don't really like shopping at Brickworks - it takes twice as long to get round and there's always stuff I can't get. For example, their range of dairy is about half the size of the much smaller Coles at Welland and they don't even stock some basic stuff like an own-brand light greek yoghurt.
Plus, I'm not sure if it's true of all their stores, but everything feels so needlessly spread out - there are multiple different chilled goods sections all over the store. Cheese and yoghurt is in one section near the front of the store, milk is right at the back next to the bakery, eggs are somewhere else tucked in next to the freezer section. It feels so disjointed.
Re: News & Developments: Port Adelaide
If I recall the former Smiths car yard is still vacant if Coles want that. Even a Coles Local might work by the soon to open Port Dock Station

I think the hypermarket concept would go well in Australia...however Woolies & Coles will prevent that happening any time soonLlessur2002 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 29, 2024 3:51 pmThis is why I don't really like shopping at Brickworks - it takes twice as long to get round and there's always stuff I can't get. That's a common strategy, the more time someone has to spend wandering the store, the more random things the store can put in front of their eyes and they might buy.Llessur2002 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 29, 2024 3:51 pmPlus, I'm not sure if it's true of all their stores, but everything feels so needlessly spread out - there are multiple different chilled goods sections all over the store. It's also a common tactic in things like the escalator layouts for shopping malls. Make people have to circle around to move up and down floors, increasing foot traffic in front of businesses.
Of course in situations like the Myer Centre it can backfire, as the harder to access floors are essentially abandoned by customers.

Ok.. am I missing something? In the early 90,s the Coles/Kmart “ hypermarket” based on a European model was opened on the current site to much fanfare. The Kmart merchandise was mixed in with the Cole’s food isles and vice versa. It was too confusing for customers, so the whole lot was separated back to seperate Cols/Kmart, with a dividing wall put in. The whole lot downsized and dumbed down. Now they are changing the name, and going back to the 30 year old concept that didn’t work previously??? In this day of counting every molecule of cow farts and exhaust emissions, are we really playing musical chairs with giant retail sites, and all the wasted resources that entails for no real change of function?rev wrote: ↑Thu Feb 29, 2024 9:27 amhttps://www.adelaidenow.com.au/business ... 8faabcedceAustralia’s biggest Woolies and new Big W store set for Port Adelaide Plaza

I don't think you know what a European hypermarket really is. Combining Coles & Kmart isn't exactly it.claybro wrote: ↑Fri Mar 01, 2024 2:14 pmOk.. am I missing something? I can assure you I know what a European hypermarket is, and can confirm, having lived in Dale Street Port Adelaide in the early 90’s this is exactly how this complex was marketed. “ Australia’s first hypermarket”.
