That "Price Conversion Chart" is ridiculous. 100 yen is $0.96, but in-store? $3.30!

That 0.96 is the spot price. It differs in banks and exchanges.
And what the heck is Daiso? When did they creep in? They have like two dozen stores around Australia, 2 here in Adelaide? And no fanfare, media hype, and people lining up for hours like usually happens in Adelaide when an international store opens up?

The 100yen is a to refer to the price printed on the packaging, which is pre-tax in Japan. Then factor in the cost of importing, and then buffer for the exchange rate (which as until recently been closer to 80 yen to the dollar than the current rate).

Always felt Officeworks would eventually end up in this spot. But good replacement regardless.

I'm yet to visit the new store but going by the photos, that looks smaller than the Myer Centre store surely?

Looks like a small store for sure... to the point if they wanted to claim they're a supermarket they could even get around the regulated opening hours?
As for the prices, minimum wage in Japan is approx AU$10 an hour... whereas in Australia it's double that, plus weekend shifts, plus Sunday loading etc... And we don't have the economies of scale Japan has.

minimum wage isn't an indication of anything, what's the median wage? how many homeless people do they have? what is the cost of living index?

Minimum wage is a good indicator for what the retail workers at Daiso are getting paid, and hence why the average cost of items is a lot more than 100 Yen.

It looks bigger in person. The Myer Centre tenancy was squashy.

Milligram opening soon on Rundle Mall:

Good idea for me as there's plenty of other sushi outlets with competition!
For starters, my avatar is the well-known Adelaide Aquatic Centre insignia from 1989.

Bit of a tough location, it's the same tenancy that Red Door Bakery failed with.
There's a lot of competition for sushi (both kaiten-zushi and just take away stores) around the mall, and I don't think Sushi Train really has the margins for such a high rent location.
