What happened to the proposed access from Richmond Road for taxis/rideshare? It'd be great to have another route that avoids SDB and HB in peak.

Land is reserved within the Runway, Tapleys, Terminals & Business and West Beach precincts for a future third runway. The third runway is planned to be located parallel to the main runway and on the western side
of Terminal 1. While it is not envisaged that the third runway will be required within the planning period of this Master Plan, the reserved land will be maintained and preserved for the long-term development potential for a third runway.
I thought it was going south of the main runway where this development is, but based on the 2020 doc is that saying it's north of the existing runway?
I didn't think there would be enough space between everything to fit it there.

Wow, I didn't realise it would be so far north like that.
Do they own the golf course land?

redevelopment of any land on my diagram that my illustrated runway crosses is federally banned

All of that green area and retail district is on lease and will eventually be redeveloped when the third runway is built. There will also be a tunnel built under the runway for tapleys hill Rd

That said, while I'm not a proponent of moving the airport like some suggest, I would bet good money that second runway never happens in any of our lifetimes. If the capacity is ever needed I think we'd instead see a second airport built North of the city as the suburbs will continue to spread that way.

Yeah I don't see it happening either, especially with its path and noise complaints.
Money would be better spent on a new airport to the north. Somewhere like Middle Beach.
It would be interesting if Parafield could be merged in with it also as Parafield sits on a lot of good inner suburbs land.

Thats a great point. If Melbourne airport can operate with just one main runway up until now, why would little Adelaide need a second?

I also think there would need to be a large underground metro infrastructure plan announced in conjunction if an airport to the north of the city was ever to occur.

Melbourne has 4 main airports but offer different things. One even has 5 runways.

Adelaide currently handles about 8.5 million passengers per year, and is expected to handle about 15 (+/-1.5) million by 2050 (Federal dept of Infrastructure, May 2024 forecast). Melbourne airport handles about 35 million passengers per year, and plenty of other airports overseas with a single main runway comfortably handle similar numbers, so yeah, it would seem that Adelaide airport has plenty of time and room for growth before the second runway option needs to be considered. It's far more likely that the remaining general aviation & even regional operations are slowly farmed off to somewhere like Parafield first.

This, and with that the existing second runway extended to handle larger aircraft.

Regardless, Tapley's Hill Road will need to be tunnelled if any further runway works are undertaken (be it extending existing runways or building new runways), probably should have been done the last time they extended the runway but everything always seems to be done on the cheap in this city.

Thanks for posting, remember it now. I'm at Mile End and woke up thinking that was a bloody big plane for that time of night. Especially taking off in this direction where they rattle the windows.

At 4:40am a 737 freighter from Melbourne got close to landing before going around - that might have been the loud noise, it's what woke me up this morning. (edit - just realised the Air NZ flight landed quite a bit earlier)

Nope, the freighters land in overnight on reduced thrust where they can. Last night was definitely a 777 takeoff over the city
