News & Discussion: Squares and Parklands
Re: News & Discussion: Squares and Parklands
Personally I think if they really want to make the square it self a focus, they need to go under. But they wont, because they're trying to please everyone and delivering nothing that does. The cyclists might be happy.
Send Morphett & Currie under a raised square. One intersection there, instead of the three sets of lights that exist now.
Get rid of the roads on the east and west.
Open up Waymouth street to just east-west traffic flow.
On a larger, raised square, would be plenty of room for east-west and north-south shared paths for pedestrians and cyclists, a plaza area, other community amenities like public toilets, maybe a basketball half court, even a cafe.
Isn't going to be expensive? Of course, but that's the price that has to be paid with virtually every piece of infrastructure in this city because of decades of band aid and ill thought out solutions that just kick the can down the road.
Is Adelaide a major capital city, or is it a provincial town? If we're just going to be nothing more then a provincial town, then people better lower their expectations across the board, especially on economic and job opportunities and growth.
This is the sort of infrastructure developments that will transform the city and make it more livable more so then changes to the skyline with skyscrapers.
Traffic flow is improved, pedestrian & cycling safety is improved, open and usable public space is increased and improved.
An improved Light Square like that might actually encourage some better developments on it's periphery, perhaps the Tafe is moved out and in it's place residential towers go up with ground level cafes with outdoor dining in the square.
Sorry my image isn't as fancy as the councils overpaid promotions lol.
White bit is waymouth east-west only.
Green overlay is the whole square.
Black bits are Morphett & Currie below the square obviously.

Re: News & Discussion: Squares and Parklands
I suspect that vehicle access to Playhouse Lane is why the options both keep Morphett Street hugging the east side of the square.
Option 1 seems the best, although I don't see the point of the paved section since the need for bus traversal means the square will extremely rarely if ever be closed off like Victoria Square is.
We'll likely get a cut down version of Option 2.

Furthering on the aforementioned, they should remove roads entirely from these squares, be it through or perimeter. Turn the nearby laneways into replacement/alternate routes. Honestly, the entitled dependency of Adelaideans using their private vehicle and the subsequent requirement to cater for this conot use to astound me.
Re: News & Discussion: Squares and Parklands
Which laneways? This square is a tricky one because there's the Morphett Street bridge, and Currie Street is the main East/West bus route through the city.Patrick_27 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 07, 2024 1:15 pmFurthering on the aforementioned, they should remove roads entirely from these squares, be it through or perimeter. Light died in his cottage called ‘Theberton’ in what is now current day Thebarton (located on the old West End Brewery site close to the banks of the Torrens). There was a massive public memorial service for him and the various monuments atop his grave have been funded by colonists of the last 150 years.

It just amazes me that a moderator of a forum about... Adelaide, doesn't even know the single most important person in the history of the town is buried in Light Square. ...and moreover one of the 'senior' members of this same forum wants to put a road straight through his gravesite. Its new levels

Many people are amazed by most of your posts abc, and so the world keeps turning. People are not communists or dictators or belong to some ideological cult. As you have done, convinced people with facts.
As for Light, you are right abc, he is buried there, the only person that has been given the status of being buried within the square mile of Adelaide. Everyone else important most likely buried at West Tce cemetery like Bonython.

It never ceases to amaze me how when the same couple of individuals converge on a thread it's derailed without fail within a a post or two from either of them.

Re: News & Discussion: Squares and Parklands
derailed? the topic is about squares and parklands and the big brained special guys here want to put a road through Colonel Light's gravesite... and simply pointing this out is derailing the thread? inconvenient facts are inconvenient
