We already have it on the northern end. At least in the south, about half of it will be underground with little surface disturbance.

The traffic on South Road is atrocious and this will bring it into the twenty-first century. While I'm all for public transport, realistically this sort of urban motorway needs to be done given how car-dependent Australia is.

LA has 18 million people. We're a long way from that.
Once again, how many of you people that extol the virtues of dEnSiTy actually live in a highrise apartment...

Actually it will bring it into the second half of the 20th century.Ursus Maritimus wrote: ↑Fri Sep 27, 2024 9:27 pmThe traffic on South Road is atrocious and this will bring it into the twenty-first century. We're playing catch up as usual. And in the case of the not too long ago completed northern connector, failed miserably when the rail component was not included in the final build considering how much housing is going to built in the region that motorway runs through. 20-30,000 people in Riverlea in the coming decade. Imagine Gawler without a train line. That motorway is going to see some significant congestion at peak hours, and further down the line the NS Motorway will be a nightmare.

The railway wasn’t for commuter rail, it was to replace the ARTC through Salisbury and would join the Globlink Hills bypass.rev wrote: ↑Sat Sep 28, 2024 10:22 amActually it will bring it into the second half of the 20th century.Ursus Maritimus wrote: ↑Fri Sep 27, 2024 9:27 pmThe traffic on South Road is atrocious and this will bring it into the twenty-first century. Adding onto that, if the Northern Connector rail component was ever built, the current corridor via Salisbury could be a good route to run a Riverlea/Two Wells service.SBD wrote: ↑Sat Sep 28, 2024 11:03 amThe railway wasn’t for commuter rail, it was to replace the ARTC through Salisbury and would join the Globlink Hills bypass.rev wrote: ↑Sat Sep 28, 2024 10:22 amActually it will bring it into the second half of the 20th century.Ursus Maritimus wrote: ↑Fri Sep 27, 2024 9:27 pmThe traffic on South Road is atrocious and this will bring it into the twenty-first century. I know it the initial vision or proposal was for freight, but without rail being taken into account when building it, it will now cost more if/when they ever do it.SBD wrote: ↑Sat Sep 28, 2024 11:03 amThe railway wasn’t for commuter rail, it was to replace the ARTC through Salisbury and would join the Globlink Hills bypass.rev wrote: ↑Sat Sep 28, 2024 10:22 amActually it will bring it into the second half of the 20th century.Ursus Maritimus wrote: ↑Fri Sep 27, 2024 9:27 pmThe traffic on South Road is atrocious and this will bring it into the twenty-first century. The housing developments will come right up to the motorway. A rail line down the guts of the motorway would have allowed for park and ride facilities to be built adjacent to the motorway, pedestrian walkways under or over the motorway to stations in the centre. But we lack any 'visionary' thinking in this states political circles. Probably wouldn't be able to safely fit two tracks down the middle now, and certainly there's no room for stations etc.
It's a sad joke.
[U/C] Re: M2 North-South Motorway
The most recent design included space for a rail line to the west of the road, the middle of the road design was removed a long time ago.

Basically the gist is they're looking to buy more TBMs to speed up the process.
I know they already have planned for 3.
TBMs don't come cheap. They're like a billion dollars each.
Won't be long before this one blows out to $20b. Money we literally don't have. Labor are spending money like drunken sailors on this project
Property acquisition for an open motorway the whole route rather than tunnels would surely have to be the cheaper option by a mile.

the sooner its completed the cheaper it will be with the current levels of inflation[Shuz] wrote: ↑Sun Sep 29, 2024 2:57 pmBasically the gist is they're looking to buy more TBMs to speed up the process.

A summary of the news is:
Torrens to Darlington project is expected to cost $15.4b and completed by 2031.
The government picked Herrenknecht as the supplier of the tunnel boring machines. They are to be manufactured in Germany and China and then assembled and tested in China before arriving in Adelaide.
There will be 3x large ones @ 15m wide 100m long. These will be for the main tunnels. There is enough machines to begin from both ends at the same time.
There will be 2 maybe 3 small ones which are 4.1m wide. These are to drill linking tunnels between the main tunnels.
The total cost of all units is about $180m.
The first machine is expected to arrive by the end of the year.
