[SWP] Re: Lot 14 (Old RAH Site)
There is money - big money - in the weapons industry. Not so much in the museum industry, if you can call it an industry. Malinauskas has his hands full with the forced merger of the University of Adelaide and UniSA, green hydrogen and talking to Albanese about social media bans. I actually like him as a premier, but the point stands.
I can see the cultural centre being built, but if it is, it'll spend a lot of time on the procrastination pile.

The belief that the Museums don't make money is simple not true; not as much as defence, sure, but then I don't know of any industries that come close to defence in that respect. Museums need investment to make money, just like anything else. Our state is unique in that it's legislated that our main Museum and Gallery must be free for anyone (excluding those visiting exhibitions), given the opportunity I think there are several politicians who would change this but I don't think any changes to this would benefit the level of investment that's currently going into SAM for instance.Ursus Maritimus wrote: ↑Fri Nov 15, 2024 7:46 amThere is money - big money - in the weapons industry. People can argue that Adelaide isn't a drawcard for these things, but if you actually bothered to research our collections, you would realise what a lucrative position we're in in terms of what's currently not on display. Bearing in mine that Adelaide was colonised by free settlers, typically with some level wealth (for the time) and wealth at that time typically meant an appreciation for Art and Museums.
We can make all kinds of excuses for Malinauskas on this, but at the end of the day, it's simply because he doesn't give about shit about this type of culture. He's a sport nut. He would have so many people in the drivers seat with him on all of those things that you've claimed that he's doing, Marshall did just as much and still managed to consider most realms of government responsibility.
My gripe with Mali on this, is he talks about a lack of financial resources to make it happen (despite there already being a sizeable Federal Govt contribution), but then spends $45m on upgrading Lyndoch Oval for two fixtures in Gather Round 2025? He used the inquiry into the South Australian Museum to preach his support for the institution, but the reason that the Museum was making those research position cuts was because Mali's government stripped it even further of its funding prior to all of this.
My last point for consideration is this, SAM's last upgrade was the construction of its front foyer, cafe and gift shop and some rejigging of the Aboriginal Cultures Gallery in the late-90s, prior to that, it's last upgrade was sometime in the late-70s/early-80s; the exhibits have barely changed at all in that time. Despite this, every year thousands of primary and secondary school students use the facility to learn, seniors groups use the space for meets ups, interstate and international tourists visit because it's a cost effective attraction that's right in the heart of the CBD. That's SAM, similar can be said for AGSA. Now imagine is Tarrkarri was in the mix, but not just any Museum, the first of its kind in the world.

Mali has nailed SA's future to AUKUS and the US warhawks
we can't manufacture anything else because of energy prices however like WWII our isolated location while also in a strategic region for US's plans for war with China make the manufacture of heavy arms viable.

A well-considered post, and I agree with pretty much all of it. I want ths unique cultural centre to be built (and built beautifully), but our politicians won't make it a priority. And indeed, museums are easy targets for funding cuts and it shouldn't be that way.Patrick_27 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 15, 2024 11:02 amThe belief that the Museums don't make money is simple not true; not as much as defence, sure, but then I don't know of any industries that come close to defence in that respect. The Innovation Centre proposed for Sub Lot E1 will embody the enormous potential that South Australia has to offer and will be the first new development to be built at the innovation district. It is envisaged to deliver a minimum of 17,000sqm of net lettable area which will be underpinned by a 77%* leasing precommitment for 10-years terms to committed tenants:
· Department of the Premier and Cabinet
· Adelaide University
· Defence SA
· BAE Systems Australia
The Innovation Centre will be a hub for the creation of defence related activity, such as AUKUS and the Hunter-Class Frigates, creating jobs to support the State's economy over the coming decades.

Major US defence company sets up in SA
Following repeated engagement with the Malinauskas Government over more than a year, SNC has opened its Australian headquarters in South Australia, further solidifying the state’s position at the forefront of the nation’s defence industry.
The major US defence company’s newly established Australian subsidiary, SNC AUS, has joined the more than 160 organisations that already call Lot Fourteen home.
In 2023 the Malinauskas Government’s US trade office began working with SNC, which employs around 4,000 people globally, to explore opportunities to stimulate economic growth in South Australia and play a pivotal role in the AUKUS agreement.
Premier Peter Malinauskas advocated the strength of the South Australian defence ecosystem when he met with SNC during a defence-focused trade mission to the US in May this year, before Trade and Investment Minister Joe Szakacs met with the company in September.
SNC specialises in aircraft modernisation and integration, electronic warfare technologies, and innovative software solutions that enable connected protection through command, control and communications systems.
Its Australian subsidiary will focus on delivering technologies including electronic warfare architecture, digital radio frequency, and unmanned platforms and sensors.
SNC AUS will benefit from Lot Fourteen’s world-class collaborative research and business ecosystem that is dedicated to driving productivity and solving complex global challenges across space, defence and critical technologies.
The company is already engaged with the Australian Defence Force (ADF) with plans to further expand its local presence and unlock new technology job opportunities for South Australians.
The new headquarters complements SNC’s existing presence in the United States and the United Kingdom, aligning with the AUKUS trilateral security partnership.
SNC AUS will co-locate with world-leading organisations including the Australian Space Agency, SmartSat CRC, Australian Cyber Collaboration Centre, the Australian Institute for Machine Learning, Stone & Chalk and Amazon Web Services at Lot Fourteen.

Oreshnik is a 15 year old IRBM cut up and hacked together for short range terror strikes because Russian military production has disintegrated so fast they can't keep planes and cruise missiles in the air in numbers anymore, and practically speaking Adelaide was an ICBM target for much of the more dangerous cold war anyway thanks to the Orion fleet at Edinburgh.abc wrote: ↑Fri Nov 22, 2024 10:23 pmgo watch a video of Oreshnik strike then ask yourself, do you want lil ol Adelaide to have a target painted on itmattblack wrote: ↑Thu Nov 21, 2024 7:04 pmMajor US defence company sets up in SA

There's no reason to worry about the hapless economic and military flailing of Russia somehow reaching Australia because another defence contractor has opened a satellite office in Adelaide.
