The state government is going to pitch in $2.7M to help build houses for workers in Bordertown. The council has bought the land and will provide the internal roads. I hope what they build looks more interesting than the artist impression.

Planting the foundation to grow SA’s Forest Industry
Release date: 29/02/24
The Malinauskas State Government is delivering on another forestry focused election commitment with the release of the South Australian Wood Fibre and Timber Industry Master Plan.
The Master Plan provides a vision to further grow and develop South Australia’s $1.4 billion forest and timber industry for now and future decades. The Plan has been developed by the Forest Industries Advisory Council of South Australia (FIAC-SA) in consultation with the Minister for Forest Industries, the Honourable Clare Scriven MLC.
Three goals have been identified through the Master Plan to strengthen the state forest and timber industries, domestic manufacturing and infrastructure capability, including:
The right resource and capability
A future focused workforce
A clean and green circular economy.
The Master Plan will immediately start investing in projects identified as priorities with a $200,000 investment for Fennell Forestry to commence Phase Two of an electric log truck trial - examining how heavy vehicle decarbonisation can contribute towards a green circular economy. The trial will build on the outcomes of a Phase One trial run last year by Fennell Forestry testing Australia’s first electric heavy vehicle.
The Master Plan will be reviewed annually to keep pace with socioeconomic and environmental changes influencing the industry, particularly in such areas as international trade, climate change and technological developments.
In addition to the electric log truck trial, the State Government has also announced $70,000 in funding for the South Australian Forest Products Association to develop a State of the Industry Report. Other projects identified as priorities through the Masterplan will be developed and implemented over the next three years as part of the State Government’s $2 million election commitment.

New four-storey hotel apartment development planned for Mount Gambier
ByGracie WallacePosted on December 9, 2024
A new hotel apartment development is set to transform 2 Sturt Street in Mount Gambier, with plans for a modern, four-storey building offering 82 dual-key serviced apartments. The development will feature different accommodation options, including studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom suites, as well as four accessible suites. It’s set to provide a much-needed option for both locals and visitors looking for quality short-term accommodation in Mount Gambier.
The design of the hotel apartments is both simple and elegant, drawing on Mount Gambier’s historic architectural style while including modern elements. The building will use high-quality materials that will naturally weather over time, giving it a timeless feel that works with the local surroundings.
A key feature of the design is the undulating winter balconies that will run across the building’s facade. These balconies not only provide protection from the weather, but also offer private open spaces with stunning vistas to the north and south, adding both aesthetic appeal and practical benefits.
The new development will be built on a 3,180 square meter site, with a building footprint of 1,680 square meters. The hotel will offer several on-site facilities, including a reception area, gym, conference rooms, business lounge, amenities, and an alfresco BBQ area. There will be 65 car parking spaces, including accessible spots, and a drop-off area along Sturt Street for easy access to the hotel.
The hotel will house 82 dual-key suites, with a mix of 10 one-bedroom, 13 studio, and two two-bedroom apartments, as well as one accessible suite. The guest rooms will offer modern, comfortable interiors, with the ground-floor suites featuring landscaped courtyards that front Sturt Street. The upper-floor suites will benefit from deep winter balconies, which will provide guests with private outdoor spaces and panoramic views.
This development is historically significant as the site is heritage-listed. Some walls of the building date back to 1882 when it was a flour mill. The new hotel will honour Mount Gambier’s history with design features like natural stone accents around the windows, reminiscent of the old South Australian Hotel.
The Hotel Apartments development represents a new era of accommodation for Mount Gambier, meeting the growing demand for quality short-term stays in the city. The city has long been in need of more diverse, modern accommodation options, and this project is set to address that gap.
Public consultation for the project has already begun, allowing the community to provide input and feedback as the plans move forward. The development of these hotel apartments is an exciting step for Mount Gambier, as the city continues to grow and evolve.
