Exactly, so for mpol and shuz (especially shuz who has been on this forum for years) , to question why this news is important and to shrug it off as a “non news story” is laughable as is the ignorance of such important retail/business news regarding this very important development.
I don't see this as a win for the precinct, but rather another step towards it becoming a sterile shopping centre. The ACC have done their ratepayers and regular, long-term market goers the dirty with such a deal. Humour me for a second as I identify what exactly was great about the Markets before all of this came about, the food was of a superior quality to the average supermarket offering but it was affordable and therefore accessible to all. With the onset of this redevelopment, and to an extent the appointment of Theo Maras as the Central Market Authority Chair, the Markets have seen an exodus of their long term stall-holders, with vacant stall-holder space being turned into high-price restaurants, the authority forcibly pushing those remaining stall-holders to expand and upgrade, plus hiking the rent up which ultimately is driving the price of goods up. Whilst some of the obvious favourites of the Markets remain, if you frequent the Markets enough (which I suspect most of those who disagree with my points don't) you notice negative effects this development have had and continue to hav on the Market hall.timtam20292 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 13, 2025 12:24 amExactly, so for mpol and shuz (especially shuz who has been on this forum for years) , to question why this news is important and to shrug it off as a “non news story” is laughable as is the ignorance of such important retail/business news regarding this very important development.
From reading timtam's post (and certainly my position) was that there was no position of win - or loss - actually suggested. Simply that it was important.Patrick_27 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 13, 2025 2:29 amI don't see this as a win for the precinct, but rather another step towards it becoming a sterile shopping centre. It matters because ICAM will eventually have control over the tenancy mix in the Market Square retail precinct.
