Problem solved at a cost no less than $300m I would estimate, and not only does it solve 1, but 2 problems!

By splitting Fullarton Road into two one-way access roads from the Britannia intersection, with northbound traffic heading along Dequiteville/Hackney/Mann roads, and southbound traffic heading along Fullarton, Bailol, Pembroke, Eton, Bruton and Park roads, it transforms the intersection into a standard 4-way traffic junction. Each one-way corridor would be serviced by the same amount of traffic lights along its course, so that neither traffic flow is favored by a quicker access time. (I do propose the closure of Bartels Rd and also re-aligning Rundle Road so that it goes into Grenfell St, creating a east-west traffic corridor across the CBD from Glover Avenue into the Parade)

The southbound lane would require minimal property acquisition from St Peter's College along Bailol, Pembroke and Eton streets to suffice a 4-lane traffic corridor and the diversion from Park Tce into Bruton St would use the land now vacated by the former Channel Seven studios. In the event this couldn't happen, a costlier (but more direct option) would be to cut straight across from Bruton St into Park Tce, compulsorily acquiring the units that are in the way. (see the dark grey route on map)

During the course of the Clipsal 500, northbound traffic would simply be re-directed along to share with the southbound route, reducing both lanes to two in each direction.

Oh and if it makes the Parklands Society happy, they'll get some parklands space because Dequiteville Terrace would be a 4-lane road, not the 6-8lane monstrosity that it is, alongside the closure of Bartels Rd. Fullarton Road (north of the Britannia intersection) is already a 2x2 road, which would just be converted to a 4 lane one way road, with no on-street parking.

At first glance, I'll give it a tick of approval. Well done Shuz.

hey shuz, good out of the box thinking...

Would you also make Fullarton Rd 6 lanes from the Britannia Roundabout down to Greenhill Rd? I believe this would complete the eastern portion of the ring road.

...and re. dequetteville terrace being made slimmer - i'd not recommend giving the land back to the parklands. Instead, make a wide tree-lined footpath on the other side. That way you can use the land at a later date without any hassles! Maybe even some sort of side access road?

Could work but you'd be faced with a tonne of opposition over the necessary acquisition of around 20-30 residential properties along Baliol St, Pembroke St, Eton Ln, Bruton St and Richmond St. As well as the realignment of the 'kinks' at Baliol/Pembroke and Bruton/Richmond/Eton.

If I were supreme benevolent ruler for life, I'd totally do it. Along with my suggested realignment of Rundle Road to meet Grenfell Street and a few other wild ideas I have.

Its bad. 5 roads into a freaking 2 lane roundabout, of which ALL are major traffic corridors. Its a freaking nightmare... and Ive only ever driven through it like three times, once which some stupid moron decided to use the left hand lane to make a cut across me to go straight ahead when I needed to exit left (as I entered from the right)

You turn left from the left lane,
You turn right from the right lane,
You go straight from both lanes.

Simple.

Canberra has 80km/h roundabouts that lead off freeways.

Yes I know which lanes to go into thankyou very much!

Anyways, thanks for the positive feedback on my plan to those who gave it.

I dunno, you were saying you were entering from the left and exiting from right.

I worded it badly, but re-reading it slowly may help clear things up.

It's an interesting new concept idea, one that could go a long way to solving this mess.

A ring road should have very few interruptions. The majority of traffic must be able to pass without slowing or worse, stopping. Shuz's recommendation mostly achieves this...

Terminate all 5 roads into a carpark on the Rondabout, as we all want to go to the new revamped Victoria Park - we don't need to go anywhere else... :P
