Forward thinking here, with the proposed soccer stadium, and the Marj to be developed pretty much adjacent each other, It would be wise to have a train station directly underneath the Port Road bridge, to service the two localities in fair favour of each other. With buses running overhead, they could turn it into an interchange, and provide additional bus 'superstops' on the bridge for connecting services.

It's a good idea (with buses on top), but a station under the Port Road bridge would be on a bend, which is not ideal. Stations should be on straight stretches of track.

This would require closure of the Mile End station, as it stands, for it is too close in proximity to the other, but again I would relocate that to sit directly underneath the Keswick Bridge, to service the sports precinct there, where again another interchange could be made above for buses.

You mean underneath Sir Donald Bradman Drive (Hilton Bridges) and level with Santos Stadium (Mile End Goods Yard station). Don't forget the possibility of a bigger interchange further south at the Keswick Interstate Terminal which should incorporate suburban platforms under one canopy.

Ideally Fontanarosa (AUFC) should be lobbying the government for the soccer stadium to be built at Mile End, maybe on ETSA Park and redesigning the whole precinct to include a better indoor sports centre for Netball and other indoor sports.

And I think we've come full circle (again? lol) I suggested the mile end solution complete with train station a while ago. My reasoning was that the area is already a major sporting complex and has a handy train line nearby.

Whatever stadium they wanted to build at the time. It was never (still hasn't really) agreed on what should have been built. Some people wanted AFL, some wanted Soccer, I was pushing for a multi since that would have been better.

I am firmly of the opinion we don't need a new stadium. We just need to improve transport to the one we have. If modern football really calls for a new style of stadium, I'm all for pulling the crows out of the AFL for two years while they re-build it at its present location. Put some life back into local footy, get some grassroots stuff happening again.
The idea that Adelaide should build a 60k+ seater stadium in order to host a World Cup match is ludicrous. It smacks of "if you build it they will come" or "the rain follows the plough" mentality. And we all know where that left people who built north of Goyder's line, now, don't we?

I don't see centralisation as necessarily a good thing, (one of the reasons I want the casino in Glenelg, another post in this forum) and I think a major sports stadium with its traffic and other logistical woes is better kept away from an already crowded City. The styx is actually the best place for it, if you can only provide the transport. Sure it's cold at West Lakes, but that's the point of a winter sport!

Well, Adelaide doesn't have a second stadium of the right size, and I refuse to countenance any development at Adelaide Oval, which in 10 or 20 years will be the envy of every city which already bulldozed its heritage stadium for a mass-market monstrosity.

I offered a pretty good alternative- get back in touch with the old suburban clubs. Sure you might miss the AFL for a while, but the long-term benefits will be greater than the short-term pain. TV will have to satisfy themselves with new Sydney and Gold Coast markets while Port and Crows are off the air.

Although Port at least still draws small enough crowds that it could play at Alberton...

The lost revenue for both South Australian AFL clubs would be nothing short of dire; the public would never forgive the SANFL, demanding all sorts of expensive marketing efforts to win back lost memberships and stadium audiences; the lost television exposure for team and stadium sponsors would see the cancellation of millions of dollars worth of contracts; the AFLPA and AFLCA would protest about the sudden loss of income for players and coaches; the SANFL would lose match-day takings for two years; the AFL brand in South Australian would be forever tarnished......these are all consequences with very severe long-term ramifications.

In any case, the MCG redevelopment shows that large works can be undertaken whilst still maintaining adequate public facilities. There's no need for anything quite as drastic as shutting up shop for two years.

A multipurpose stadium is not a good idea, it has its drawbacks as we have already noted, especially if we are talking about hosting soccer and a World Cup (or hoping to). As I have already said, If AUFC wants to build their own stadium let them, if they lose money it will be their problem, but in the interim we should all be backing them to be successful in both their club and when Australia bids for the World Cup.

If it (soccer stadium) is around the city and close to public transport it will work. If it is out in the sticks with no decent PT kiss it goodbye. As for the AFL and West Lakes it seems they have had their opportunity, if they wish to stay there then they'll have to better PT.

So really we're having two debates. We agree that AAMI is fine if they build more PT, but only for Aussie Rules. The other debate we're having is whether Adelaide can support a large, purpose-built soccer stadium, if not in the City then somewhere.

My answer to that question (emphasis on the 'large') is: No.

OK OK, here's one for you all to contemplate .. I was thinking about this for a while and thought I would make a poor attempt at sketching what I think is an option ..

If any of us have seen a Grand Prix race (on tv that is) as the Hockenheimring in Germany you will know what I am talking about. It would be like a miniature version of what they call the Motodrom stadium section.

We could put a brand new stadium on (or around) the Clipsal 500 track's 'Haripin' and this will kill two birds with one stone .. we will have
1. a new stadium and
2. permanent seating in Victoria Park for the car race.

The race doesn't coincide with Footy (other than if a soccer game is to be played there .. but I still think we should build separate stadium for this ..) and all that would be needed is perhaps one side of temporary stands for corporates above the Pitts. But the new stadium would have its own corporate section which could also be utilised.

If I have done this correct then the picture is attached .. I have simply used previous pics, BUT, the stadium would obviously be placed further North, around the race track hair pin!!! There would only be two parts of the stand chopped out for the race track .. BUT, all stadiums have this (eg. for ambulances, cars, trucks for concerts etc.)

You miss the crucial point, talrok, and that is that many people, myself included, will go to great lengths to prevent any such building in the parklands. It is not a matter of killing two birds with one stone, it is a matter of keeping the parklands strictly low-rise very minor buildings and lots and lots of green.

So I think it's a bad idea. Sorry, it's not personal.

no probs .. I just personally think we have heaps and heaps of parklands .. so much so that even if a stadium was built there would still be plenty left over .. they are everywhere fro crying out loud, taking up valueable prime realestate .. we are no longer living in the 1800's!!!! .. plus from the pic provided, it (and the other parklands) don't look that 'green' for most of the year anyway and they have nothing on or around them to get people there .. again, wasted land. I'm not saying get rid of them all but surely utilise some of them. If people want greenery, move to Gawler and beyond!
