Take away this man's ePencil! I demand that you stare at the Reserve Bank and the State Administration Centre in Victoria Square for a week until you come round to the Correct Way of Thinking.

Touche'. :P But was it "designed" in the late 60s, and 'completed' in the early 70s? Technically, that makes it a 60s building.

The building was completed in 1973. I don't know when it was designed, but most likely in the early 70s.

However, the brown brutalist style, was in fact more fashionable in the 70's as opposed to the 60's here in Adelaide. In fact, it managed to survive well into the early 80s, as evidenced by the Wakefiled House of 1980 and the BHP Building of 1981.

Wakefield House is another one of my favourites. I like to think of it as Adelaide's own WTC...

If you're into brutalist architecture, I suggest you check out the Morgue and Forensic Science building on Divett Street. It is regarded as oe of the best examples of that style in all of Australia.

Australis House (77 Grenfell St) is about to receive a makeover of its 'plinth':

Image
77 Grenfell Street is currently undergoing an upgrade and refurbishment, enhancing the façade and building entry and providing great exposure to Grenfell Street with full height glass windows to the street and a grand entry statement to the main foyer. The building will be second to none.
Following the refurbishment, we have 3 tenancies available for lease with excellent exposure to Grenfell Street.

Tenancy 1 - 172sqm
Tenancy 1A - 159sqm
Tenancy 2 - 154sqm

^^ Looks good. It'll definitely improve the street interaction of the building.

Tower project to get kick-start

October 20, 2009 12:01am
..A NEW 30,000sq m office tower - similar in area to Westpac House - could be built in Adelaide before 2012 on the back of a government leasing requirement.

The Federal Government, through services group United, has announced it is seeking 30,000sq m of office space by 2014, with the first half needed by October 2012.

The move means at least one of the dormant development projects in the CBD is likely to get off the ground.

Property Council of Australia SA executive director Nathan Paine said it was good news for commercial construction in the city.

"This is positive for commercial development in the CBD," he said.

"There are a range of sites with development approvals for buildings of that size, so what it will mean is there will be cranes back on the horizon in Adelaide."

A spokeswoman for the Australian Tax Office confirmed the ATO was the prospective tenant and was at the stage of "assessing the market". She said the new building would be required to meet green building standards of four-and-a-half stars.

At least six developments are awaiting pre-commitment in Adelaide, including Aspen Group's City Central Tower 8, the Tritan Corporation and Moritz Group site on Franklin St, and the Kambitsis Group site on Wakefield St.

"I have absolutely no doubt that there will be a lot of competition for this development," Mr Paine said.

Colliers International director of leasing Jon Cranna said the market currently could not cater for 30,000sq m of space.

"They wouldn't fit in a current building," he said.

To complete the building by the third quarter of 2012, construction would need to start by late next year, he said. "They will really have to get their skates on."

Jones Lang LaSalle SA managing director John McBeath said the new building could precipitate rental growth in the rest of the market.

Basically no chance in hell, but how good would it be if they revived 20-22 Currie street for this.

Lets hope the government realises the physchological impact of a new tower and chooses something that will actually change the skyline.

However, based on some of the past decisions, I have a feeling that this project may take up the next building in the Yorke Commercial Campus, which is 30 000sqm2.

Sounds good :)

I think CCT 8 or the Franklin Street tower could be seen as a preference, given the ATO's current locations in Waymouth Street and in CCT 1.

Yep, that was my first though, too.
Sigh... if only.

Nice surprise when I saw this crane this afternoon, behind the Wakefield hospital between Wakefield and Flinders St (near the old Music School).

Could not find the thread page but recall that it was to be apartments - was approved well over a year ago.
