Part of the Gawler Bypass Road is now being included in line with the Northern Expressway project, here are the details i found online.

Extension of Expressway upgrades link to Sturt Highway
Additional works are being undertaken to extend the Northern Expressway project to the Sturt Highway Upgrade. This will improve safety and capacity of the Gawler Bypass. During these works, both Weyland Road, Willaston and Mallala Road, Gawler Belt will be closed for a time, but not simultaneously. Detours will occur in two stages.

Temporary Rd Closure Weyland Road, Willaston:

Weyland Road will be temporarily closed from 21st of January to enable:

Full reconstruction of the existing road

construction of a deceleration lane into Weyland Rd

Installation barriers for the protection of motorists

installation of lighting to improve the intersection with Weyland Rd

Safety I would say.

It would not suprise if it is ultimately made 80 from the Waterloo Corner Road intersection or thereabouts. The Roe/Tonkin/Reid Highways in Perth (which are more limited access than Port Wakefield Road) have speed limits of 80 across the signalised intersections.

Why have they alienated the alignment of all the interchanges that cross over the expressway? Now the road geography of the area is all jumbled. I liked it back in the day when the streets intersected at right angles and were proportionate to one another. Is it too much to ask for a little perfection in urban planning? The trend these days of curvy roads and dead ends is really starting to piss me off.

Perhaps most of Adelaide's old fashioned road engineers moved to Perth.

the interchanges are offline from the existing roads because it saves the community time in traffic management which also has obvious economic benefits to the proponent. it would be silly to build the road online with the existing road (say heaslip road) and have detours in place for nine months.

the road has been designed to a queensland specification - not sure if they use roundabouts up there.

I can understand the whole road detours thing; but why couldn't the wacky diversion have been the road detour whilst they rebuilt the existing road?
