you shouldn't blame the construction companies, they are only playing the game under labour rules.

taxpayers never get good value for money with labour because of all the graft and corruption that goes on... lots of backhanders to union heavies and brown paper bags stuffed with lettuce.
hence labour govt are always opposed to ICAC since this will be bad for business.

remember the myer centre was supposed to cost $120M but ended up costing $900M thanks to all the union rorts.

A lot of developers in Adelaide are heavily connected to Labor through "progressive business SA" and are therefore rewarded with various infrastructure and housing projects across the state. Reductions in taxation or regulation (a typical "pro business" agenda) mean nothing to them when Labor favouritism screws over their competitors to give them shonky mini monopolies over certain things.

The problem with your conspiracy theory is that it doesn't fit the facts. Just because the unions were corrupt and controlling twenty years ago doesn't mean they still are! On other threads here, people who work in the construction industry have posted what it's like now that it's not union dominated.

We do need an ICAC, but Labor's opposition is far more likely to be because of failure to recognise the scale and importance of the problem than any corruption on the government's part, and we still haven't seen any evidence of this.

that is so naive.
labour govt make development so difficult and convoluted and tied up with red tape so they can squeeze as much 'donations' out of developers as possible.

developers know that to play the game they must follow labour's rules and that means greasing as many palms as possible which magically makes all that red tape disappear and planning approval magically materialises.
of course the developers just pass on the extra costs to the consumers who are the real mugs in this game.

I reckon you're the naïve one! You're so out of touch you first claim that the unions still control construction, then when I point out that this is no longer the case, you accuse the government of corruptly using red tape to extort development.

But whose red tape is it? Not the state government, but local government, and in particular the Adelaide City Council. When has planning approval ever magically materialized? And if it's that easy, why is the old LeCornu site in North Adelaide still empty?

Face it, you're clutching at straws!

(if you want to discuss this further, I suggest starting a new thread in The Pub, as this is off topic here)

Taxpayers never get good value for money with the Liberals because nothing gets done, aside from the selling off of publicly-owned assets, creating inferior service. :)
cheers,
