We're about to lose another great attraction in the Adelaide area: The National Costume Museum in Lobethal.
Many haven't heard of the National Costume Museum (now in one of the buildings near the indoor market in Lobethal) but it's been around for decades. It used to advertise a lot more but I think now the owners can't afford it, and also don't know how to advertise online.
The people running the museum have said that they have to close within the month, because 1. They can't afford the rent which is getting increasingly higher, 2. The insurance is really high too, 3. The council keeps pushing them into smaller and smaller spaces, 4. The council now wants the area that they now inhabit. 5. They can only get 4 volunteers.
It is run by elderly people- I can see why they might just give up under these circumstances.
But it is a beautiful museum and has SO much potential, especially if it had more space so they're able to show the hundreds of outfits they have stored in the attic space right now.
They deserve to be helped out. It is a great little tourist attraction and could be much greater. It's a wonderful thing to go and see if you're into history, want something to do (only $3.50 for adults!), or are a teacher wanting somewhere for your class to go.
I'm shocked that the council is doing this, that there's no sponsors (perhaps the owners don't know how to ask?) and that yet another attraction is being allowed to close.
It doesn't sound at all right to me. And the clothes will all be sent to the town of Millicent, or returned to their original owners (half of the stuff is on loan).
Pass on the news, tweet about it, talk about it on Facebook, and if you know anyone who might be interested in sponsoring them, or providing a new museum, or if you could write in to newspapers with letters to the editor, or to the Lobethal council, that'd be fantastic.
I know this isn't 'building' but it's to do with making Adelaide great.

It's about time they should relocate! The Railway Signal & Telegraph Museum has also been closed since 2005 and should relocate too!
For starters, my avatar is the well-known Adelaide Aquatic Centre insignia from 1989.

You mean that the railway museum should start up again?
I'd love that.
My Dad was suggesting that the costume museum should move to Birdwood, so, gender stereotypically/sexistly, there's something there for men and women- the car museum and the costume museum. I'd like to see the costume museum stay in Lobethal, but under better conditions.

The costume collection from Lobethal is to be transferred to the National Trust's costume collection at its museum in Millicent in the SE.
