[COM] Victoria Square Upgrade - $24m
[COM] Re: PRO: Victoria Square Upgrade
Talk about verbose. Victoria Square is on the intersection of King William and Grote? Gee, tell us more!
[COM] Re: PRO: Victoria Square Upgrade
How splendid.Paris wrote:Crucial to the design, I believe; King William Street should be restored as the thoroughfare it once was - running directly through the Square. From there, the potential is unlimited. This opens up the opportunity for street frontages to be activated, allowing users to spill out directly onto the square, then onto oncoming traffic.
Keep Adelaide Weird
[COM] Re: PRO: Victoria Square Upgrade
how about making it an open night club. That'd bring life back into it.
Don't burn the Adelaide Parkland (preservation society)
[COM] Re: PRO: Victoria Square Upgrade
what was all that stuff about Lights vision. The squares have been evolving and have changed their format many times since 1836. However, we are now in 2010 and its time for a revamp based on people over a major traffic thoroughfare

That was meant to read "..rather then onto oncoming traffic.."

That's the Adelaide imagination and enthusiasm I'm used to! None whatsoever. Woohoo!yousername wrote:This city has long been called backwater - and although it helps - it certainly isn't going to bring tourists or much foot traffic to the area.
Based on what? Back to the loch with you Nessie. And whoever it was espousing reopening KW Street through the centre, meet me outside in ten minutes. I've been drinkin!
Evidently this thread has suddenly been invaded by fucktards who've only been to Murray Bridge. Try the Flinders Ranges as well. They're in the same state, so you won't have too many cultural challenges there and they really are magical.
Jesus Homunculus Christ.
Paris, thanks for the considered essay. But I defy you or ANYONE anywhere to prove to me what exactly Light's/Kingston's vision for Victoria Sq ACTUALLY was. If we look at the earliest documents (those remaining after his unfortunate house fire), Grote/Wakefield St should be an integral part of the square. It clearly crosses it. Do we stick to that slavishly, even though neither of these gentlemen foresaw the advent of the internal combustion engine or the traffic light? And there was that whole question about an Anglican cathedral in the middle there. Should we perhaps be consulting them about this? There's you're City of Churches iconic building
If the design of Adelaide is failing, maybe it was a design flaw? Just sayin. Col. Light is the only bit of folklore that Adelaide has and I'm all for maintaining the myth, but not to the point of being retarded. Like I said earlier, the major flaw in the design is that it was conceived on a ridiculously optimistic scale (Light was the quintessential Romantic and if it was Kingston, the quintessential amateur).
THIS IS AS GOOD AS IT'S GONNA GET PEOPLE. Get excited that at least when it's done, you'll probably go there just out of curiosity. After that, I guarantee you'll go there again, just because you can.

I wasn't saying that is my opinion! I'm just saying that's the view of many interstaters. What I was saying is that I don't think this plan will reduce this opinion much, even though due to the space, something amazing could be made!rubegoldbergdevice wrote: That's the Adelaide imagination and enthusiasm I'm used to! NO NO NO! It's North Terrace. I would've thought it was obvious. It has all the kinds of cultural institutions Fed Square has, but real, and it has heritage awesomeness as well as being a pedestrian space.City Cross? (Rundle Mall Area)
Hindmarsh Square?
City Central Plaza? (behind ANZ)
This is for another thread, but anywhere else in the world would have capitalised on this years ago. A concerted marketing plan (including the universities) with some extra funding for the museum and art gallery so they're not so crap is all that is needed. The only thing missing from the Northern Lights thing was that none of the projected-upon buildings were open. And is it just me, or has anyone else thought they might like to go visit some art on a Friday evening, only to be confronted by formidably closed doors? A poor show. Don't just rely on bloody cafes. Are we that shallow? There are enough of them.
North Terrace is (as so many things in Adelaide that are completely taken for granted) unique and yet only partially capitalised upon.

I disagree, I usually challenge such opinions, and from what I have noticed, after I ask the person to substantiate their put-down of Adelaide, they usually mention our inability to do anything with Victoria Square.yousername wrote:I wasn't saying that is my opinion! Hence, like fixing our airport stopped all the put-downs in that field, fixing Victoria Square should eliminate this embarrassment for our city.

I agree wholeheartedly, but I think that something better and more radical than the current plan would severely change people's thoughts. Will wrote:I disagree, I usually challenge such opinions, and from what I have noticed, after I ask the person to substantiate their put-down of Adelaide, they usually mention our inability to do anything with Victoria Square.yousername wrote: I wasn't saying that is my opinion! Keep it up, and this will be another thread in the bin.
Calm down people, any more personal slander, you will be banned. Healthy debate, definitely, not insults.

[/quote]An information session will be held in the Square on Thursday 20 May, from 11:00am to 2:00pm. This is an opportunity for you to learn more about the draft Regeneration Masterplan and have an informal discussion with the project staff.
i think i'll attend this session - anyone interested in tagging along? i'm not sure where it will be held though...
Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

I'll be there. I've seen both "the square" and "the town hall" given as locations ...Wayno wrote:i think i'll attend this session - anyone interested in tagging along? i'm not sure where it will be held though...An information session will be held in the Square on Thursday 20 May, from 11:00am to 2:00pm. Oh to be there! Wayno, could you post anything that will be of interest. (or by 'private message' if you think that more applicable)
