Whats the forums view on the Festival centre - is it just a 1970s relic that should go and be replaced by something "special" to really put the finishing touch on the whole re-development? Or does it have too much sentimental value etc?

Things seem to be really happening over there. The river precinct, if delivered properly WILL end up meeting place. Something of South bank Brisbane evident but better as evidenced in the flythru. Many 'crowd pullers' together will revitalise the CBD as well.

Have you been to South Bank in Brisbane recently? It's buzzing. There's people there all the time. Adelaide with its parklands and lack of activity on either side of the river is not set up to match that.

Sentimental value? No way - a completely barren eyesore of wasteland in an amazingly important location. Bulldoze those ridiculous bits and pieces of would-be-Mondrian rubbish and replace with a decent space with facilities. Please...

The one thing they should do which i cant see from the images of festival plaza is where the open space has a roof of some type im gathering their is a large viewing screen in there, what they should be using as a roof is the same design or similar to the canopy out front of the entertainment centre it would fit perfect with the colour and light theme of the precinct, and would also attract people as does the entertainment centre canopy, which in my opinion is a waste out at hindmarsh and should be in the city.And anyone have any idea what the ufo type object next to the casino is i hope its acolour and light thing like the rundle st lantern.

i'd rather it be an interesting water feature, the one at glenelg in summer has kids playing around in it all the time, much like the one in front of the museum...something like this:

I'm not entirely sold on this Riverbank plan, it's nice but hasn't really got the wow factor... though it is early stages. I'm also a little lost at how trees are going to grow on a bridge - Morphett Street :S

I personally believe the northern riverbank should be developed into a living/dining precinct. Not only is it part of the ever-growing sports precinct but the views of the city skyline from northbank are truly fantastic. The State Government/ACC could open the land for a couple of low-mid rise apartments with cafes, bars and restaurants along the water edge facing the city skyline and water feature.

The casino concept is different to say the least, and a playground?!

In the end, the plan is on the right track but it still needs alot of work.

I kinda know where you're coming from, it does have a certain cringe-factor to it, but the relatively new dad in me says that as long as everything else we could expect from a development of this magnitude is there, there might as well be something like this for the kids.

I'm also happy for it to be relatively simple playground equipment rather than a wanky water feature (which appears in the river anyway) etc. The city would benefit by all sorts attending this precinct, including families that want to come along and enjoy the area without feeling like they'd have to blow heaps of cash. I could understand arguments along the lines of "if you want your kids to play on a swing go to a suburban park", but the mix of both worlds might actually entice families to venture out of suburbia for the day, which I imagine is the whole point.

I'm slightly disappointed that there's:
- No mention of a western entrance to the train station. This would attract people to the western area of the development.
- No mention of the Intercontinental forecourt. This is a huge gap in the North Tce street scape built form and separates the casino and train station from the proposed retail.

I agree, and I'd add the open car park beneath the promenade as another issue. Well, that, and the Riverside Centre, which must die.

Plus, I still can't figure how a Casino extension will work, and the fact that the concept is a thought-bubble in physical form hardly helps. I'm probably just a cynical bunny tonight, but I don't feel I've learned anything from this fly-though business. I suppose it's meant to assure me that someone, somewhere is working this all through. It might be idea, though, to start involving the public. I'd certainly feel more confident.

An open space with a roof is an oxymoron. There is no need for a roof over the plaza. The UFO object is supposed to be the Casino extension.

Absolutely agree. Standard play equipment can be found anywhere. If this is supposed to be a premier location in Adelaide, have something a bit more interesting for everyone, and let kids work out their own way to adapt it for fun and play.

Initial reaction is positive. Still early stages but good to see the ball get rolling.

On a side note, I hate to be "pro-roof" but one particular venue that I do think would have benefited greatly from a roof would be Memorial Drive. It's a shame that the cost of Adelaide Oval and the need to keep public money spending down has stopped this from being redeveloped properly.

Nothing wrong with play equipment, if that space was just going to be empty anyway then it is adding something to the development.

It's not play equipment directly, but one thing that the Riverside precinct in Brisbane does really well is having things to attract lots of different people. There is a giant paddling pool with fake beach for kids/families, nice gardens, food, markets.

The most important thing in building up such an area is to get people using it so that other cafes and stuff can survive which in turn helps further establish the area. If having some play equipment there means that it is a more likely place for a family to head for the afternoon then it's a good thing!
