Old David Jones & John Martins photos?
Old David Jones & John Martins photos?
Does anyone have or know of a place where I can find pictures of the interior of both the old david jones building and the old john martins building? I have heard that both were quite a step up of what is currently on offer in Adelaide but I was not around back then to be able to compare for myself what we may have missed out on. I understand that the old David Jones building is still standing and the new David Jones was built on the former John Martins site or is it the other way around?

Arki, I'm surprised there wasn't more response to your post, although I only just noticed it myself.
Yes, the old David Jones building is still standing -- renamed as 'Rundle Mall Plaza', containing JB Hifi in the basement, Spotlight on the 2nd floor, etc, etc. And, yes, the new David Jones was built where John Martins previously stood. John Martins closed in 1998 (early 1999?) and was demolished shortly thereafter. It was a 'mid-range' department store -- kind of in the middle between Harris Scarfe and Myer/David Jones.
The ground floor of the old David Jones was certainly quite a spectacle, as the photos from kjc88 show. Lots of mirrors and marble everywhere. The ground floor of DJs in Canberra City is actually still like that, albeit on a smaller and less-grand scale. I wonder if it might be the same in other cities too, where the local DJs hasn't had a refurbishment for a while.
Sorry, no photos from me.

It's = it is; its = everything else.

Re: Old David Jones & John Martins photos?
That would be greatly appreciated.
in 1995 and 1998 - my parents wrote to John Martins due to my fascination of the elevators - to my delight (i was only 10) they wrote back asking if i would like to spend a day in the lifts with the ladies. It was probably the best day of my life!
I do have a photo also.

this is splendid of you to upload these - it's great to see the store.
BUT after working in a department store - that table setting made me laugh! Awful!
