That is indeed good news. We've previously primarily been using Jetstar to get to Japan and back, but that requires some awkward connections on the east coast. The improved route via HK certainly looks more attractive.

Yeah jetstar sucks for Adelaide to Japan - when I looked into it it really wans't worth it and by the time you pay for a stopover in cairns/gold coast at a motel or whatever it was often comparable to malaysia airlines. Factor in all the risks associated with jetstar (delays, cancelled flights) and Malaysia airlines came out the winner.

Added a correction to the Cathay Pacific non stop flights to Hong Kong piece posted earlier. It should have read: the three weekly non stop flights from Adelaide to Hong Kong, not the other way round. My bad by cutting and pasting. I guess most of you understood that anyway.

I still can't believe you can leave Adelaide at 7:45 and arrive in Hong Kong at 2:30. That's terrific - I will really have to try and use Cathay the next time I go o/s!

Great news from singapore airlines. Hopefully it becomes permanent.

The new service SQ276 departs Adelaide at 720AM and arrives in Singapore at midday. This will no doubt offer much better connections to south east asia, previously flying to SEAsia on Singapore airlines required overnight stopovers in Singapore (dep adelaide 12:40 arr singapore 17:40).

You can now, for example, fly on Singapore Airlines on the same day to Ho Chi Minh City, arriving there at 18:45. So there is a choice of two airlines (Singapore Airlines and MAS) for same day travel to south east asia.

Flying back into adelaide the new SQ279 departs singapore at 20:35 and arrives in adelaide 06:05 (the other service departs singapore at 23:50 and arrives in adelaide at 09:20)

And more positive news from MAS
Daily flights on the cards for airline

IT is only "a matter of time" before Adelaide has another international airline arriving daily.

Malaysia Airlines stepped up to six flights a week each way, non-stop between Kuala Lumpur and Adelaide earlier this year and said yesterday it intended to move to daily services as soon as possible.

Malaysia Airlines state manager Steve Abbott said that as more new aircraft came on to the fleet, it would allow the seventh flight a week for Adelaide.

"We are working to the goal of being daily out of Adelaide."

He said it would not be this summer but probably soon after that.

Mr Abbott said the airline was doing well from relatives and friends visiting Asian students studying in Adelaide.

Singapore Airlines said it would have 10 flights a week to Adelaide for the summer period and last week Cathay Pacific announced an improved service of non-stop flights from Adelaide to Hong Kong for summer.

A little off topic, but just for those wondering about how Economy Class is configured in the MAS A330-300. It is 2-4-2. A let off for the poor sod who gets stuck in the centre of the MAS B777-200 configuration of 2-5-2.

Cheers

P.S. Personally I love B777s...it's the wide cabin.

Rumour: I have heard that Singapore Airlines new Low Cost Carrier (LCC), that they are setting up, may make Adelaide one of its first ports of call from next year. The new LCC will use SQs older Boeing 777-200ER equipment and will possibly be named...wait for it...'Scoot'

Whilst it will be great to see another international carrier fly to Adelaide, it may possibly come at the expense of full service SQ flights.

Only a rumour at this stage, but time will tell.

Hmm, I think it's mentioned a page or two back... but that name is a bit shocking! If the demand is there for daily SQ flights (plus extra over Christmas), I don't see why they can't try out this new carrier maybe three or four times a week on top of SQ?

+1, Adelaide is hoplessly underserved by international low cost carriers at the moment. The closest we have is Virgin who arent particularly low cost on the Adelaide to Bali route because they have a monopoly on direct flights.

Cairns, Gold Coast, Darwin and Perth all have more international LCC flights than us, only Hobart is worse off.

I've been thinking for a while that its only gotta be a matter of time before a LCC starts flying here. I always thought it would be AirAsiaX once they got their slots at KLIA problem sorted out, but a LCC to singapore would be even better with the connected terminals (KLIA LCCT is separate to KLIA meaning if you fly into KL on AirAsia its only really practical to fly out on AirAsia).

Fly to Singapore on this new LCC, then fly onwards using Jetstar, AirAsia, the new LCC again, or one of the dozens of full service airlines that fly out of Changi including qantas and Singapore Airlines/SilkAir.

For those of you that travel Economy Class (...and I guess that is most of us), Singapore Airlines will now take your request of a specific seat at time of booking, including through your travel agent. The advanced seat selection was already available to those wanting Suites, First and Business Class, but thanks to consumer demand it has now been expanded to Economy Class.

Cheers

P.S. Make sure to visit the many websites like SeatGuru, etc., to view seating configurations and tips on selecting your seat.
