It's certainly not the West Virginia that John Denver had in mind.

That was in Wheeling anyway. No comparison. In my imagination the name had conjured up an attractive area due to associations with Virginia. I did'nt know how unattractive the area was tillI went there on 9/2/10 to look at the expressway. What a pity.

It's a dreadful hole of a location in the middle of hideous flat wastelands that will be populated by residents who have to live there, rather than those who want to. It's cut off from the ocean because there are miles and miles of thick mangroves in the way, it's an entire day trip into town, and it will inevitably be filled with unattractive homes built by clueless people (propped up by artificial government incentives and hence really can't afford a home anyway) who manage to make a brand-new house look fifteen years out-of-date and show a complete and utter inability to maintain a respectable garden.
There, I said it.

My you do have attitude.
Have you forgotten how some of the current suburbs in adelaide started out in their very beginnings.
I remember the Ingle farm K-Mart being built, nothing around it for miles, but hey it is in the middle of suburbia now.
I think we all need a reality check.
Yes, there needs to be development along all the railway lines similar to what has been achieved in Sydney as they have some bigones, but you also need to cater for single income families who cannot afford to live closer to the city.
Believe it or not Adelaide has been doing this for years, but perhaps not on the scale it should have.
Recently i visited the St leanards Station in sydney which is a short walk from the North Shore Hospital. In and around and above the Railway station there are Houses, all types, shopping facilities, walking over passes, a very big facility over all and this is what is need ed in Adelaide.
But whom is going to invest that sort of money. These developments are huge, and of course Sydney has the population.
Of course Adelaides popoulation is projected to grow rapidly as well, but some big infastructure projects need to be built.

Ingle Farm and the surrounding sprawl is a great example of how NOT to do it. There's no real transport out there other than the bus network. Most people drive. Why would we want to repeat previous mistakes, even further away from existing services and infrastructure?Wilfy 2007 wrote:...Have you forgotten how some of the current suburbs in adelaide started out in their very beginnings.

A bit off topic I know but if the northfield line was kept open it could have gone into Inglefarm and Para Hills.monotonehell wrote:Ingle Farm and the surrounding sprawl is a great example of how NOT to do it. Buckland Park-all that is wrong with the mindless expansion of suburbia..no transport...no jobs...no schools....no leisure activities. If
I was 16 years old and living in Buckland Park in 2020 I would be playing the Sex Pistols very very loudly as I sang along to the words..
"No Future! No Future for me!"

Re: #PRO: Buckland Park Development
There's a statutory public meeting tonight about the rezoning of Buckland Park, north of Adelaide.
In December 2006 and again just before the 2010 election, the government announced an agreement with the developer Vosporos for the development of a new township on the farmland. However, the government made the announcement without rezoning the land.
Now, although it is committed to the developer, the government has to go through a process of public consultation to decide the rezoning.

I never did find out, Prince G.
I was at Virginia this afternoon, though, and I can report that large areas of Buckland Park are under water, with further areas soggy. Choose your subdivided allotment carefully!

Re: #PRO: Buckland Park Development
I recently revisited a former residence of mine. It was a sharehouse in the late '90s out that way. I noted that all the former flood plains had been built on. I remember trying to get into uni one some winter days when I couldn't catch a bus, as they had been cancelled because there was so much water flooding across the road.stumpjumper wrote:I never did find out, Prince G.

And now there's houses there? WTF?

It's the same story at Murray Bridge - the western bank is now covered by houses.monotonehell wrote:I recently revisited a former residence of mine. It was a sharehouse in the late '90s out that way. I wonder how well this development will be designed to deal with the odd flood that hits the Gawler River like recently, considering the river itself marks the northern boundary of the development.
By the way, this one now has its own website: http://www.bucklandpark.com.au/

As it stands, a fair bit of it would require rubber boots in a 1 in 100 year flood event if you don't want to get your feet wet. Towards the southern end, a boat might be better.AG wrote:I wonder how well this development will be designed to deal with the odd flood that hits the Gawler River like recently, considering the river itself marks the northern boundary of the development.

Drainage channels are proposed however.

Public transport plan.
http://www.bucklandpark.com.au/picsmaps ... taging.pdf
Of note is what looks like entry and exit ramps at Port Wakefield Road, suggestive of grade seperation.
