Watch the sharp fall away in OS student numbers (due to recent publicity concerning large numbers of unscrupulous Australians exploiting Indian students). Could have an interesting effect on this and 140 Nth Tce. Rencent info - the number has halved in the east. (VERY rapid reaction from India). We could do without this in Adelaide. Anyone have any info on these matters concerning Adelaide?

Hope both projects ARE built, despite this one needing more work on that 'heritage thing' on the street.

There was a article the other day saying the recent racial tensions over in places like Sydney and Melbourne, is actually making Adelaide more of attractive place for international students wanting to study in Australia.

i believe there's been a 50% reduction in Indian student 'enquiries' for Sydney & Melbourne in the last few weeks, but this should blow over given a bit of time. There's also been a drop in tourism enquiries to NSW & Vic...

So yes, this presents as a great opportunity for Adelaide. Rann, get your butt over to Pune/Delhi/Bangalore next week and sell sell sell...Strike while the iron is hot, dig the well before you're thirsty, haste not waste, a stitch in time - blah...

Still at least it blends in with the shitty 60s number on cnr of Gawler Place.
Mon dieu! Classic '60s International-style architecture, with white marble detail, vaulted canopy and penthouse!

Council approves 18-storey student building

AN Adelaide City Council panel has approved an 18-storey student accommodation building planned for North Tce almost a year and a half after designs were first lodged.

Designers of The Promenade first applied for approval in February last year, just months before the council was stripped of responsibility for developments valued over $10 million.

Along with an 11-storey Andrews St apartment block, also approved last night, it is one of the last major developments controlled by the Development Assessment Panel.

Meetings in December and April resulted in the plans being returned to the developer because the tower clashed with a heritage building.

CITY PLANNING BODY CALLS FOR TOUGHER RULES

Councillor Sandy Wilkinson last night said the lengthy process had delivered a "dignified" and "noble" building.

"I think the public could well ask who they would rather have determining the future form of their city – a discerning DAP or a rubber stamp," he said.

I know there's enough posts about how shit this new design is, and I don't mean to beat a dead horse, but I have to put my two cents in too...

This is a pile of shit on top of a shit sundae

Where did they get their general public feedback from? Is it from within the council and the DAP themselves, or when they mean public, as in the public outside of this silly dictatorship board?

What is so "dignified" about degisn/proposal No.3?

Anyone has email to Councillor Sandy Wilkinson? Someone needs to email him to get him to elaborate on his point, and also to address that what he thinks of the public thinking is entirely wrong.

:wank:

It is interesting to note that the first two designs had windows down the eastern facing side, while the approved design has them gone. Perhaps that is one good thing about the approved form of the development, if it's a forward-thinking feature.

Not necessarily a forward-thinking feature to have bland concrete wall on the side. Other buildings in the city have proved that.

I'm guessing that the walkway between EDS and the Oaks Horizons allows for windows on their western and eastern sides respectively given that they don't share a physical boundary, whereas the eastern wall of this North Tce proposal is directly on the boundary shared with the former Gallerie arcade and could, theoretically, be built up against?

Correct Ominicron.
Just to confirm, this is what the council/heritage wanted designed to get there approval.
If a new design/plans are proposed they will definately go through DAC, so there is hope.

So, basically, if the developer wanted, they could submit a 'revised' application to the DAP (eg... the original proposal) and it could still get built?

Not that it's going to happen, just playing devil's advocate to see whether this is a possible scenario given the situation at present with the two bodies.

Wanted to add my two cents worth... Yes, what a disgusting looking building. The older renderings were much better. What's going on?

Cheers
