Yeah but it leaves the city feeling empty for the entire summer when school's out and the international students return to their homelands. I don't want Adelaide to put all its residential eggs into the student basket.
Adelaide won't do that, education is one of our largest exports and a critical part of our economy and future economic growth. Supply is catching up with demand and will reach a natural equilibrium at some point, but has to be part of our growth strategy. Better to have it than not to have it. Plus education exports attract ancillary industries that will help stop Adelaide being a ghost town so we'd be worse off without it. It's just going through a bit of a boom at the moment.

Ive detected many of the students stay well past the final exams, and the new ones arrive in Jan. You can tell because the uni's seem to run orientation outings through January where groups armed with clipboards go finding things around Rundle Mall and the markets. The other thing is that uni lodges can increase the accommodation supply in Adelaide ie unused rooms can be turned into hotel rooms.

Now while riding up to Montifiore Hill this arvo I noticed a very bright skyblue glass building pop up in the skyline and realised its this. So from a distance it looks alright

Adelaide is far more dead at night around this time of the year, compared to spring/summer.

agreed, head down Rundle street until 11pm nearly every night from Jan - April and the place is still populated by patrons.

Summer/autumn in Adelaide is fantastic

Seems like it will all pretty much level out over the year to me where the CBD actually has some life at most/all times.

ADELAIDE - TOWARDS A GREATER CITY SKYLINE

Does anyone else find $250 a week for a closet sized bedroom, and shared use amenities a bit exessive?

Yes I do, and looking at RealEstate.com.au it seems that that would be on the high side. More typical would be the $150-180 range.

Shared amenities aren't so strange - anyone who's lived in a share-house has had to share amenities after all. Indeed if you're getting a shared bathroom or kitchen that the building owners will clean and maintain, then that's a sight better than the "I wonder what the sink's clogged with today?" thrill ride that was the share-houses my friends were staying in (my skin crawls when I remember some of them).

Remember the three rules of real estate. They'll get $250.

Its hardly a proper unit. Its a tiny room that is ' yours'. then you share the amenaties with 6-8 random people.

The other hostel on Hindley Street was worse, when it first opened it was advertising single
rooms for $300 +.

On North Terrace your in a great location so its not going to be cheap. Dont forget the people who
run these places set the price according to what people are prepared to pay, its not always based
on value for money. There's plenty of International students with rich parents who will pay 250 a week
to live in the city.

The price is expensive, but the location more than makes up for it for plenty of students. Don't think of it as an alternative to a normal apartment, think of it as an alternative to a room in a share house where you would be sharing all those amenities anyway.

Yes it's more expensive than a share house room would be, but at the same time it's five minutes walk from both CBD universities and is literally a stones throw from a tram stop and the train station.
