I don't think West Terrace is suited for much else, to be honest. The number of lanes between the city and the parklands basically means the two are disconnected. They're also the least appealing parklands of the lot.

At least they're reasonably good to look at.

I was just wondering if anybody had found anything out about the Union/Ebenezer place development...

I saw they'd cut the tree down last weekend...

I heard it was going to be a 6 story boutique hotel with retail/bar underneath. Can anyone confirm? Any plans or renders yet???

Yes, it is going to be a boutique hotel with retail in the ground floor. No renders yet, but I'm sure we will see some soon.

Nice find. I've posted this as a Vision for now. Agreed?

Im very sure that I saw this project in the tender pages of the newspaper late last year. The ACC site says it has development approval, so this one is looking likely to go ahead.

Thanks for the correction.

DA/586/2007/B 23/02/2009 Application Assessed on Merit Vary previous authorisation to refurbish existing building with ground floor tenancy, construct an additional floor comprising 40 units over 4 floors, construct 6 level extension comprising 20 units, offices and communal indoor space for low income and homeless persons - minor reduction of apartments inside existing heritage section of the building. 73-79 Light Square, ADELAIDE SA 5000

I'd say that's it.

The Common Ground website says Candetti Constructions was selected as builder, and that work was due to start in January with an expected completion date in late 2009. Anyone know if work has actually commenced?

I didn't see any evidence that work had commenced last Thursday - no site fencing, signage, skips etc.

:? That second sentence implies that the more appealing parklands are less appealing. I think.

He's talking about the showrooms, I'm fairly certain.

In the Commercial section of today's paper it states that the Common Ground project on Light Square (mentioned previously in this thread) is due to commence construction at the end of April this year.

From The Messenger:
BUILDING BRIDGES - $7m Light Square project takes shape

by Adam Todd

BUILDING HOPE: An artist's impression of Common Ground, Light Square.

CONSTRUCTION of the Common Ground affordable housing complex at Light Square will start in the next fortnight.

Contracts were due to be signed yesterday, April 29, and Adelaide-based Candetti Constructions are expected to start works early next month.

The $7 million project will feature 52 apartments for low income earners and homeless people, who must go through an assessment process to secure tenancy.

The four-storey complex will be built on the site of the old Sands and McDougall building, in the square’s south-west corner.

The project was scheduled to start earlier this year, but executive director Sue Crafter said the slowing economy had made it harder to find corporate donors.

“Businesses and corporates in general are not making such large donations, so it did take us a little longer than we expected to get those donations in,” she said.

Among the corporate donors are Candetti, Bianco, Normetals, Ikea and Harvey Norman, contributing a combined $2 million to the project.

The State Government has contributed the remaining $5 million.

Ms Crafter said construction would take about 40 weeks, meaning the first residents would move in around March next year.

The waiting list for Common Ground accommodation stands at about 270.

The Light Square project is the second Common Ground development. The first, above the Franklin St bus station, opened last year and has 37 apartments.

“It’s going very well, tenants say they’re very happy there, they say they’re very appreciative to live in such a high quality environment,” she said.

“It makes a huge difference to have access to stable, high quality housing.

“One person has even moved into home ownership, so it’s going very well.”

CMI Toyota's building is also starting to rise, it's a nice height for West Terrace which it badly needs. It is currently three concrete wall plates high, which I think is it's designated height. Looks promising.
