I observed some kind of geo-technical drilling happening on this site the other day. So maybe it has survived the Abbott govt's austerity measures.

There was an article in the Advertiser last week to say that it had got final development approval and that construction would start in June.

Can hardly believe how impressive this end of the city will look in a few years - a real showpiece area both ends of N. Tce - V. impressive. Glad to see this IS going to be built - had some doubts for a while.

There was talk of accommodation issues going back 10 years ago, and with the closure of the old RAH it made no sense to remain open on Frome Road. The Med School would have already been budgeted for, and the University is in a lot better financial position than it was previously so no reason this would stop this project from proceeding.
And now that the Federal Government has just proposed in the latest budget to deregulate University fees and the University of Adelaide being one of the leading Unis in favour of this (the Group of Eight), I'm sure they'll be one of the first to raise their fees putting them in an even better financial position to go ahead with this development?

Difficult to say, they have had a massive building program over the last decade and many of their existing buildings have been extensively refurbished (ITS on north terrace, school of the professions on north terrace) and they have managed to do it with few increases in student fees. I would say most of their income come from full-fee paying students (i.e. internationals) that they would not necessarily have to do that, however given the government will most likely pull back some support from G8 universities they may be left with little choice. Hard to say what will happen, but the G8 have suggested they are open to the idea - they face increasing competition from overseas and australian universities have dropped in the league of universities worldwide, something not unforeseen many years ago.

Pretty sure the budget for this project is now officially over $200 million. Not sure if that's been mentioned earlier in the thread - I may have missed it. That's a pretty significant amount. But still no money for relocation of the dental school. Odd.

The architects for the project as most will be aware are Lyons. They are based in Melbourne, and unlike Cox who set up here for the Oval, they will fly in and fly out for the project. A shame that a project of this size doesn't have local design input at that level. Adelaide Uni, Adelaide riverbank, in Adelaide, Melbourne architects.

Any idea when this may be starting then? Iirc it was meant to be sometime soon? June/July? Excited for this one if it's still 100% on the cards.

Disgraceful really. Plenty of great architects in this state but we'll continue to lose them if they don't get the support.

Imagine if they were smart enough to hold a design competition open to the architecture students of Adelaide Uni and Uni SA? Similar has already been done with the old RAH site.

I hear the uni faculty has to find about 8mil in the short term and begun offering voluntary redundancies, still no word that this has been canned.

I don't get this common opinion that anything involving design (be it architecture, branding/graphic design, etc.) should be done by students in a competition rather than commissioning competent and qualified professionals. I'm sure the Uni has some good accounting students too, but should they farm out all the books to their 3rd year classes? Maybe those studying a bachelor of education can teach themselves? Think of all the valuable experience they'll get before graduating and then not being able to find any work at all because it's all given to the next class of students.

It's to get different ideas, I've always though. If someone produced something groundbreakingly awesome, then they could pursue looking into incorporating it into a final design. I'm not suggesting running a comp, with the winner having their design guaranteed to be built. That's just stupid. :P

You can get different ideas from professionals, who can actually answer the specific needs (and budget) of a medical school because they a) have far better experience and b) are able to be fully briefed and can work directly with the client. And that's not even touching the fact that architects in Australia (like elsewhere) need to be accredited.
