Gillard announces $100m for new cancer centre and medical school for Adelaide to revitalise West End

ADELAIDE'S West End will be home to the largest health and biomedical precinct in the southern hemisphere with two major new buildings for North Terrace, next to the new Royal Adelaide Hospital.

The University of Adelaide will get a new medical school while the University of South Australia will have a new Centre for Cancer Biology thanks to $100 million in Federal Government grants announced by Prime Minister Julia Gillard in Adelaide today.

Construction on both will start next year.

The medical school will open in 2016 and the cancer centre in 2017.

The University of Adelaide will match the Federal Government's $60 million for the medical school which will bring the schools of medicine and nursing together.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Warren Bebbington said the university will seek to have the dental school also included, though this would push the cost from $120 million to around $200 million.



The new medical school will cater for 1550 students and 230 staff, ending criticism students would be too far from the hospital when the new RAH opens in 2016.

The Federal Government's $40 million for the UniSA cancer centre will see 250 researchers housed in a new building investigating blood cancers, such as leukaemia. The Uni of SA will match the $40m but a spokesperson said it was investigating funding options for the remaining $20m.

The two new buildings will be built next to the $200 million SA Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) which is now under construction, on land donated by the State Government.

Ms Gillard said the funding was an investment which would attract top researchers to Adelaide.

"This will be the biggest precinct of its type in the Southern Hemisphere," she said.

Premier Jay Weatherill said the precinct would ''attract the best and brightest to be part of the South Australian story."

He also noted the influx of students, researchers and staff would revitalise the West End.

"You can't throw 5000 or 6000 people into part of the city without changing its culture," he said.

"This precinct will enhance our ability to attract investment, students, clinicians and biomedical researchers to South Australia."

The existing skate park will be moved to another city location which is yet to be decided.

Prof Bebbington said the medical school had been located next to the RAH on Frome Rd for 130 years and the two worked together as ''a single organism''.

"This means that organism goes on and will grow and flourish into the future," he said. "That historic partnership will continue seamlessly and without interruption.

"Being next to SAHMRI means we can centralise teaching, research and patient services in a single location."

UniSA Vice-Chancellor Professor David Lloyd said: "The West is awake in Adelaide."

"The Centre for Cancer Biology will continue to forge extensive and close relationships with industry so we can find treatment solutions for cancer patients - our goal is to develop the Centre as one of the very best in the world."

The University of Adelaide today welcomed a Federal Government grant of $60m to support construction of its new medical school building in Adelaide's West-End, announced by Prime Minister Julia Gillard.

The University will construct a new clinical health building, bringing the schools of Medicine and Nursing together, next to the new Royal Adelaide Hospital and the South Australian Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI). The vision is to also incorporate the Dental School into the new facility providing seamless collaboration between the three clinical disciplines.

University of Adelaide Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Warren Bebbington said the Australian Government grant would ensure the multi-storey facility would be ready for students when the hospital opens in 2016.

"A hospital and its medical school depend on each other. Moving the University of Adelaide's health schools to be with the new hospital in the West-End is essential to preserve the co-location and interaction we have always had with the existing hospital on Frome Road. Plus being next to SAHMRI means we can centralise teaching, research and patient services in a single location," he said. "The Australian Government's support will make a critical impact as this new health precinct comes to fruition."

The project cost is likely to exceed $130 million, and construction will start early next year. "This means that health sciences students who started their degrees with us this year will undertake their clinical training in the new building and the new hospital," Professor Bebbington said.

Professor Bebbington said the new building would reinforce the value and reputation of South Australia's oldest and pre-eminent medical school. "Every South Australian would have been treated by a University of Adelaide trained doctor, dentist or nurse at some point in their life," he said.

"South Australians deserve a first-rate health system. The University needs to work with the State to make the most of our health education, research and clinical resources to support the community into the future. Our new building will ensure the next generation of healthcare professionals are equal to the challenge."

Professor Justin Beilby, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences said the new clinical health school would build on more than 125 years of University of Adelaide partnership with the Royal Adelaide Hospital. "Our medical school has been operating for well over a century in close association with the State's primary teaching hospital. Together we have forged a great partnership which relies on us working side by side," he said.

"With 1500 Royal Adelaide Hospital clinicians teaching with us, it is essential that when the hospital moves to the other end of North Terrace, our Medical School moves too.

"And it positions us perfectly to continue our internationally recognised research in the most serious health issues facing our community - cancer, heart disease, nutrition and obesity," he said.

About the Uni of Adelaide Medical School

The University of Adelaide Medical School design concept reflects a new direction for infrastructure development to complement the needs of tomorrow's health sciences education.

It will be designed to promote small-group learning, particularly at undergraduate level, with integrated research and shared teaching areas to encourage seamless collaboration between students from different schools.

The new building concepts, prepared by Lyons Architects, feature a diversity of `new generation' spaces including:

?small collaborative group study areas

?experiential teaching spaces

?skills-based learning laboratories within technology-rich environments

?unique student social spaces to encourage a `peer to peer' learning culture


Inspired by the University's North Terrace Campus, the concept incorporates familiar features such as terracing, courtyards, cloisters, connecting stairs, unique social spaces, materials and textures.

The design will connect the streetscape with the West-End precinct and the wider city of Adelaide. There is an abundance of light and transparency and plenty of room for students to interact.

The façade design reflects the well-known West-End railway lines to create a series of sunshade devices on the outside of the building.

The ground floor will act as a welcoming `urban connection space', with views to the River Torrens and beyond to the Adelaide Oval. This will reinforce a sense of openness and accessibility for students, staff and visitors.

There are environmentally sustainable design features such as fully automated natural ventilation to key public spaces, a high performance double glazed facade, low pollutant materials, water saving and energy saving infrastructure.

North terrace will be home to Adelaide's best architecture. The medical school, cancer research centre, SAHMRI, RAH and the convention centre. What an incredible boulevard it will be!

I'd say it's going over the rail-lines. The original riverside precinct proposal had blue-printed a hotel and shopping precinct for the western side of the Morphett Bridge, but it seems that has now changed. Which is a win-win for the government; that land will now go to good use, and they've combined funding for education with funding for rejuvenating that area.

Wow, this is really going to be incredible for SA Health! This is going to be a magnet for health professionals and just as importantly, medical researchers to want to work in Adelaide. It almost makes me want to go back and start my medical degree again...... er.... almost.
And the design looks beautiful!
Now we just need some modification of the medical curriculum, Uni Adelaide to convert from BMBS to the MD award like Flinders School of Med and we MAY end up with a medical school up there with the best in the world.

This is all good news, but I am hopeful they try and find a new home for the North Terrace skate park. It would be a shame to not give those young people an alternative place to congregate. It always looks well patronised down there.

Agreed. Perhaps the skate park can move to the northern side of the tracks, along with returning that area to parklands.

Yes I agree. I occasionally choose to drive through the city on my way home to look at the SAHMRI building development and I have never seen less than a half a dozen kids in the skate park there at any time. From a design perspective, I like the location in that it has the urban 'street' appeal of being between the rail yards and the morphett street overpass. I'm usually not big into urban street art and graffiti but driving through about 10pm last night as a matter of fact there was an amateur photo shoot of female models against the urban art backdrop and it looked awesome. Anywho, the point is that it will be a shame to lose the skate park from such a prime location and thus I think it will be important to have it quite close and very quickly after, if not before the original skate park is closed.

I love the idea of this, however are these proposals contingent on Labor getting back into government? If that's the case -

Looks good, but it's just an election fantasy promise for a government that will be defeated in september. I expect this "wasteful spending" to be slashed under Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Premier Steven Marshal.
