Tall buildings does not = liveable city.

I would go as far as saying in certain cases tall buildings can have a quantitatively bad affect on micro-environments and therefore need to be held to much, much higher design standards.

Considering student accommodations usual design standards, a building of this type, this tall, AND in such a prominent location seems extremely counter intuitive, assuming the ultimate goal is a city that can be experienced in a positive way.
I'm aware of this, however Adelaide is nowhere close to the point where tall buildings are a detriment on the living quality and enjoyment of a city. So long as we're not plonking down stupid behmoths in locations they shouldn't be at, and there are decent quality control measures in place while also not stifling developers, a small splurge won't hurt the city.

In the end paragraph, the article mentions that this development will be 108m.
The proposal for the 108-metre building is due before the State Commission Assessment Panel soon, with work due to be completed in late 2019.

We know, but it's also from The Advertiser so were waiting for the official docs to be put up on the DAC site which is likely to happen in the next couple of weeks.

108m is pretty tall but I am hoping it's still 125m.

This is on the DAC site now. Expected to be approved at Thursdays meeting. Site works will start next month. They are keen to have this completed by the 2020 Uni start.

118.3 m is the height.

Few new Ground level renders but largely what we have seen.

With this and Adelaidean side by side at similar heights, it's going to look like a smaller version of the old World Trade Center in New York.

Looking at some of the images I think this will sit well next to the Adelaidean (shame about the view!)

I have it on good authority* that the developers of the Adelaidean are going to pay the developers of this building to run optical fibre from one side of building to the other, making it effectively invisible for their high paying apartment owners.

*totally made up

This 34-storey tower doesn’t belong on North Tce, says State Government architect
Jade Gailberger, City Editor, The Advertiser
March 7, 2018 12:40pm
THE design of a 34-storey student accommodation tower proposed for North Tce does not fit the character of the city’s premier cultural boulevard, says a concerned government architect.
Developer Global Student Accommodation (GSA) has proposed the $60 million, 680-bed complex for the southwest corner of North Tce and Frome Rd.
The site is currently occupied by a First Church of Christ Scientist building that will be demolished to make way for a new contemporary building.
However, concerns have been raised by associate government architect Nick Tridente about how the building will “fit into the existing streetscape and character”.
Global Student Accommodation’s proposed design for a 34-storey building on the corner of North Tce and Frome Rd.
Mr Tridente gave his support to the “aspiration to deliver a high-density student residential facility in this location” but said North Tce had a distinct character with grand buildings that front the footpath.
“The location of the site is considered significant as the city’s gateway and it offers a unique opportunity for a corner development,” he wrote in his referral.
“It will be critical that the proposal presents a convincing response to the established character of the city’s premier boulevard, which in my opinion, is yet to be successfully demonstrated.”
The setting back of the proposed contemporary building from the street corner, along with “fins” that change thickness and depth as they travel up the building, were Mr Tridente’s main concerns.
How the proposed tower would look from street level.
Developer GSA engaged its own architect who refuted the claims, stating the “the design has taken a similar contemporary approach as the Adelaidean apartment tower to the south on Frome St” which is under construction.
It has since made some minor changes to the proposed building design to address the issues raised by Mr Tridente — who remains concerned about the “appropriateness” of the facade.
If approved at a State Planning Commission meeting on Thursday, construction of the building is expected to start in coming months and be completed in late 2019.
