I do agree. If they are doing this because they think King William St is too congested im once again bewildered. Why does everyone and especially the media have constant heart attacks about King William St potentially being a nightmare. People, please, please, personally stand somewhere along King W St for more than 5 mins, whether it be peak hour or not, and you will notice virtually no congestion on King W St, compared to other roads. Potentially, it should be at its worst now, because the 2 lanes are closed off for the tram project, and the bee line buses are still running every few mins. When the tram is up and running, the bee line buses wont be there which now account for a large % of buses travelling down the street. Therefore there might be even less of this "horific congestion" that we are aparently seeing now. Replace the bloody train windows or something!AtD wrote:Seems silly to me. Yeah, it's a stupid idea alright. The cost of getting busses to suit just a few stops would wouldn't justify the benefits, plus such busses would have reduced capacity. Besides, aren't trams going to be running every few minutes?
I agree jk1237, congestion in the city is a non-issue. If you want to see congestion go stand on South Road at Edwardstown during rush hour, but even then that's not really congestion compared to what can happen over here on the east coast.

but if they buy more trams... im guessing... that would then be quicker again. Also if they extend the line to North Adelaide and North Tce (City East Direction), even more trams would be on the line.... so i dont think it would work....and this whole bus idea would no longer be possible and would have been a waste of money.

Never ever would they extend a tram line over the eastern half of North Terrace while poles and overhead wires are necessary* to power trams. It would be considered far too ugly an addition to such an iconic boulevard. * I believe there is technology around where trams can be powered through the tracks themselves and don't require overhead cables, but the SA Government did rule out the use of this technology with the current upgrade because of the dangers involved with having 'live' tracks.

As the eastern end of North Tce is a atraight bit of road, perhaps we could dig a trench along it, put some big drums and motors at each end, and "cable car" the trams along that stretch

I went into town after work tonight following a call from friend Trevor who told me that half of the overhead is up. It was already too dark for photos but there it was from City West around into Victoria Square. The Eastern side wire is up but not correctly attached to the horizontals yet. A chain block was in place at City West for tensioning and a couple of pulleys at the North Tce corner.
The media today were predicting concreting works in King William St tonight and over the weekend ahead of next weekend's disconnection of the current terminus.
