Awards help raise the profile of architectural quality as a component of good development. The AIA award winners are selected from the self-nominated efforts of efforts of AIA members.

The AIA is free to restrict the field as much as it likes, but it's a pity that nominations in the first instance couldn't come from everywhere; building designers, builders, owner-builders etc, with self-nomination as well as nomination by third parties.

This way, the awards could be widened - Australian Design Awards - with categories for architecture, industrial design etc etc.
