Re: Change your Thinking about Sustainable Development
WorldChanging are awesome. Their vision of our time as being one that requires a massive rethink and reinvention - a change as great as the Industrial Revolution or the post-war boom years - is inspirational. This isn't just some Don Burke "use compact fluoroescents, recycle grey water" stuff, this is don't expect anything to remain the same radical intervention. Highly recommended.

Re: Change your Thinking about Sustainable Development
This article on the Public Opinion weblog, "Can a rustbelt Adelaide reinvent itself?" provides some opinions and pointers to future economic growth and diversity for Adelaide in the face of declining manufacturing industries by drawing parallels with the reinvention of Boston. The focus on rustbelt industry leads to the moniker of 'dying factory town' but does not acknowledge the moves towards diversification.
The article was highlighted on Twitter (@thoughtsfactory).
"Can a rustbelt Adelaide reinvent itself with the decline in its manufacturing industry? Boston did. It was able to boost its economic growth by becoming a center of the information economy in the late 20th century. Human capital---a strong base of skilled workers---was the key to urban growth. The policy message is that as ideas and knowledge became more important in capitalism cities with skilled populations began to thrive.
Can Adelaide look like the future and not the past?
Can Adelaide transform itself from a dying factory town to a thriving information city?"
The article comments on the ability of Boston to re-orient itself and attract new residents, the value of human capital and some more contentious views around development and geography.
It should stir some debate about sustainability, diversification and vision for Adelaide in the 21st century.
