#Official - Demographics

#1 Post by Will » Thu Mar 25, 2010 11:32 pm

Since, we dont have a dedicated thread to talk about demographics, I figured it was time to create one.

This media release was released by the ABS today, and reveals that the population growth rate for SA has now reached 1.3% p.a.

This level of growth has not been seen since the postwar boom, and indicates that the state population is now growing at more than 20 000 people per annum!
Australia's population exceeds 22 million

Australia's population reached 22,066,000 as at 30 September 2009, according to figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. This is an increase of 451,900 people over the previous year, keeping the growth rate high at 2.1%.

The majority of this growth (66%), was due to net overseas migration, with the remainder (34%) due to natural increase (the excess of births over deaths).

The total number of births registered for the year ending 30 September 2009 was 296,300, 0.3% fewer than the previous year. The total number of deaths registered over the same period was 141,800, 0.3% more than the previous year.

Preliminary figures show that net overseas migration for the September quarter 2009 (72,300 people) was 1,600 people lower than for the September quarter 2008 (73,800).

For the year ended September 2009, net overseas migration was 297,400 people, 3.1% or 9,000 people higher than the previous year.

its just our state migration loss thats slightly hurting us, however if Tasmania can stop this, so should us - somehow. Maybe outlawing all 20 something year olds from moving to Syd or Mel, or maybe making incentives for them to stay

As a smaller city we are always going to lose certain people to larger cities. This is a phenomenon observed worldwide.

However, as already mentioned by jk, if Tasmania can slow its net loss through interstate migration, then I think we can too. The solution should be based on continuing to support our growth industries as well as attracting new industries such as nuclear and solar to SA. Another strategy that may help us, would be to have affordable housing.

That is an encouraging result for SA, because if the trend continues, it will mean that we will have a net loss to interstate migration of less than 2000. This means we have cut the loss by half compared to a few years back, when we were losing up to 4000 per annum.

On a side note, although expected I am nevertheless very annoyed at the way the Advertiser has reported this. Instead of focussing on the positive reality, they have manipulated the results and deranged them with negative spin, so as to create an invitation for all the Adelaide-bashers to have a say. Where is the wank emoticon?

While we are still way behind the other states, 1.3% growth (20k) is definitely a encouraging sign and shows that population growth is still continuing to improve annually.

I remember the days when only about 6-7,000 people were moving into the state.

On a side note - I will be moving back to Adelaide in about 3 weeks.

I love the fact Adelaide is attracting so many migrants, but compared to the other states we are punching below our weight on all three of those measures.

I'm surprised no one else posted this. ABS Regional Population Growth for FYE 2009 were released this week.

Yay statistics and maps.

The growth potential of Holdfast Bay and Marion is truly remarkable - there are countless opprtunities for sensible development if only developers put away their set squares for a moment and councillors set aside their hilariously narrow fields of vision. Mind you, Messrs Makris commended the Marion Council for its acceptance of the Hallett Cove Shopping Centre redevelopment and their desire to see further projects in the area, so one can only hope.

Thanks for putting up those stats Adam.

Would it be safe to say that Adelaide is now a city of 1.2 million?

Those stats exclude Mt. Barker for some reason. With Mt. Barker the number would be over 1.2 m.

The reason is that Mt Barker is not in the Adelaide statistical Division.

Indeed. The population density map shows the full extent of the Adelaide SD, doesn't it? A bit hard to tell exact inclusions and exclusions, of course, but it's not difficult to make an educated guess at the inclusions. It's certainly physically larger than what you'd describe as the Adelaide metro/urban area, that's for sure, so I'd be erring towards conservative estimates of the Adelaide population rather than pouncing on any 1.2 million figure.

Mt.Barker should be included in the Adelaide Statistical Division-its an absolute joke that it isnt! For example the Sydney SD includes the lower half of the Central Coast which is 100 ( I repeat one hundred or more kilometres from Centaral Station Sydney) Even little old Adelaide has now got exurban areas in the range of 50-70 kilometres from the centre of town. Its about time the ABS woke up to this fact when defining "statistical divisions". As for somewhere like Buckland Park.....dont get me started...!

SA population to reach 1.7 million years in 3 years

#15 Post by Straze » Tue Apr 27, 2010 2:16 pm

SOUTH Australia's population will grow by 341 people a week during the next four years, a new report forecasts.

New modelling in an Access Economics report, released today, predicts the state's population will grow by 71,000 to reach more than 1.7 million by 2013-14.

The 30-Year Plan for Greater Adelaide sets a target to boost the population of Adelaide and its surrounds by 560,000 by 2040, or an average 358 a week.

But Migration Solutions managing director Mark Glazbrook said despite the stronger forecasts SA still was "behind the eight ball" in attracting enough migrants coming to Australia.

One migrant who has decided to stay is British national Nic Dobson who obtained permanent residency about a week ago following a working holiday.

"The weather and the people are nice and it was easy to get a job because trades are in high demand out here," Mr Dobson, a 25-year-old bricklayer, said.
