I'd be more excited about this development if it were just a doubling of the central market floorspace. Couldn't care less about the high-rises and franchise shops.
I know that we don't often agree on a lot of things, but I couldn't agree more with this. There is so much vacant or dilapidated land around the Market precinct, the apartments are clearly only there to fund the project, they add nothing else to the precinct.
They add the height. 🫢
That's a trap and I'm not playing. :P

As a City of Adelaide ratepayer I very much appreciate that the apartments are there......
Cool, as a former ACC ratepayer when this was first proposed who also sat on the community focus group that was assembled by the ACC to discuss the future of the arcade and help brainstorm ideas of a way forward, everything going on above this development goes against every outcome that those focus groups. It's happening and it's fine, but let's not pretend that these apartments are an architectural marvel that bring any sort aesthetic to the Market block. Let's also not pretend like this development hasn't caused a shift in the Market's offering, and I'm not for the better.

Coles will open a supermarket inside the central market when completed.

Foodland or Drakes would have been better. The Advertiser article features so much spin:
“We are incredibly excited to welcome Coles to Market Square as the next chapter for their previous store that stood proudly since 1967 in the Central Market Arcade,” he said.
“Their unique approach to retail aligns perfectly with our vision of creating a dynamic precinct that celebrates South Australia’s food, culture, heritage and community. This milestone reflects our commitment to elevating the retail experience in South Australia.”
Unique is not the word I would give Coles.

Agreed, Foodland would have been a good fit, akin to Pasadena/Frewville.

I think that would compete with the market traders. Coles is a different product so shouldn't impact them as much.

Great news, this area has been missing a full supermarket since the arcade closed. Hopefully it will have a similar footprint like the previous store and will not be a "Metro"-type store.

It’ll be 1700sq m so about a mid sized supermarket.

$400 million transformation to bring major supermarket to Adelaide Central Market

A major supermarket chain will soon be returning to Adelaide Central Market as part of a $400 million transformation that's promising to revitalise the precinct.

The project includes more room for local traders next to the market hall, as well as the construction of a 35-storey tower featuring a public rooftop garden, hotel, office spaces and 234 apartments.

Since the Adelaide Central Market Arcade was demolished in May 2021, locals have been without a mainstream supermarket.

That will change when Coles returns as part of the long-awaited redevelopment, which is currently running ahead of schedule, with completion due mid to late next year.
"We know the Central Market is the epicentre of life in the city," Adelaide City Mayor Dr Jane Lomax-Smith said. "Everyone shops there. It's the best place to buy fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, fish."

The development is projected to provide South Australia with a $135 million boost to the economy.

2021? Didn't demolition start mid 2023?

Core rises today. The office tower cranes will need to rise soon as the core is higher than the crane operator window.
