The Advertiser" wrote:The city’s tallest skyscraper aimed at providing critical CBD housing for city workers would be built on North Terrace under a plan for a new apartment building worth nearly half a billion dollars.
The state government has secured two of Adelaide’s most exclusive parcels of premium real estate at 275 and 274 North Tce, unlocking them for a “city-shaping tower” to be built under “minimal government guidance”.
Combined, the two adjoining sites at the Frome Rd intersection create a “highly flexible”, 2800sq site for one or more towers providing uninterrupted views of North Adelaide, the Adelaide Hills and the parklands.
...
The site could be used for a range of potential uses, including both market-sale or build-to-rent apartments, a hotel or purpose-built student accommodation and affordable housing, and there could be one or two towers.
Renewal SA kicked off expressions of interest from Thursday, inviting offers to purchase the site, with minimal conditions and design requirements.
The state government said it would work with the successful developer to increase the maximum building height, making it possible for it to one day be the site of the city’s tallest tower.
...
A spokesperson said the development should create a building with significant architectural merit, “commensurate with the aesthetic of the area”.

FINALLY. I've been saying this for years, whatever this site was to become, it needed to put a lot of people in the east end, to avoid the needless destruction of heritage on this side of the CBD and to avoid any potential building of residential on Lot 14.

This is more or less exactly what needed to happen.
That thin block on the corner absolutely had to be amalgamated into its neighbour. It was ridiculous.
That area needs a cluster of buildings to dampen the impact of the 2 towers there sticking out like dogs balls.
A tall tower, preferably 2, are required to block the sight lines of the free world to the gobshite Adelaidean tower.
I don't think a 'new tallest' was required in any of these instances, but something substantial There is just as much merit in something in the 100m range to taper down to the East End and not be so overbearing on Ayre House.
My only question here is the resident mix. The East End is a cultural precinct. It seems the only people that have been added to it is students and non permanent residents.

Just saw this on the news…
So it’s gonna be taller than 180m huh? They’re calling it the new tallest, maybe 200m+ potentially?!?

I won't hold my breathe, atleast until we see some action on its Masons neighbour. Lots of nothing burgers since covid. Hoping we are past that now.
Fingers crossed.

Like... Nick Champion is the minister for development. He said this is an opportunity for Adelaides new tallest building.
Nick would be well aware of the Freemason Masonic Lodge development, so clearly he thinks this building will go higher

Not really. New tallest now would mean 139m. They wouldn’t include an unbuilt building in their definition of new tallest.

Wasn't there a proposal for a skinny tower on the budget car hire site right on the corner not that long ago? Looks like this vision includes the whole corner not just the car hire allotment and goes all the way back to Vaughan Place with a skinny shorter tower, which will probably be a student accommodation tower mentioned in the article.

Not sure when it happened but noticed today there’s some demolition in progress signs on the exterior of the building on North Terrace along with metal fencing. The car rental next door that faces Frome still operational though.

A couple of months ago there was a Renewal SA request for developer proposals for this site. I suspect it is being cleaned up ready to hand over to the successful tenderer.

Boards were still up last time I went past, imagine they'll be making a big deal of it once they pick the buyer.
