In America they found that trains that displayed "ditch lights" were involved in far fewer grade crossing accidents. So while it might look "Americanesque", it's probably worth doing from a safety point of view.
cheers,

Perhaps..? OBahn equipped buses have a rotating strobe light fitted on top at the rear in case they stop or are running slow on the track. Helps with visibility so one inattentive driver doesn't run up the rear of another bus.

I'm not saying I don't like them, actually quite the contrary. I think it looks quite cool :D

Another quick question about the upgrade of the Belair Line. I caught the train on that line today for the first time in a few weeks and I noticed on all the stations that speakers have been attached to the light poles (about 6-10 per station). Does this mean TA are planning on replacing the little announcement box with proper loudspeaker announcements?? That seems to be the only logical reason, I'm not sure why else they would have speakers at the stations (although some nice ambient noise or elevator music would be nice  )

Could they be for the security intercoms?

Well they are located on the top of most light posts and they are definately the type of speakers you would be using if you were to have loudspeaker announcements at the station.

Exactly as they have them at Paradise Interchange, security use them to remote shout at miscreants they can see on CCTV.

The State Government have stated that the major part of the station revamp will happen once the electrification starts.

I will go back there with my camera.

it has a huge corrugated iron looking barricade right around it. It looks like a prison.

Major track works on the Gawler line will start on 6 June with the total closure of the line between Adelaide and Mawson Interchange.

Works include:
• upgrading the base layer
• installing new gauge-convertible concrete sleepers
• improving stormwater drainage
• refurbishing/replacing rail
• connecting the new Dry Creek railcar depot to the Gawler line

Letters and brochures detailing the timing of the 6 June works, maps and substitute bus timetables will be distributed to local residents from Monday.
